No. 11 Regis women's lacrosse polishes off 3-0 week with 19-7 rout of Rockhurst

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 11 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team capped an action-packed week on Saturday, collecting the team's third win in five days with a 19-7 drubbing of Rockhurst University.

Regis improved to 6-0 overall with the non-conference victory, dropping a talented Hawks out of the Great Lakes Valley Conference to 4-4 overall thus far this spring.

"Rockhurst is a strong team with a dynamic offense and really athletic players. We were pretty prepared to key in on their top players and I thought we did a lot of good things on the defensive end with our switching and taking away their dominant hands," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "We knew it'd be a competitive game and we wanted to set the tone early. After them getting up on us, it was great to see us answer right back quickly in that first quarter. It set the tone for the rest of the game."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Rockhurst hung tough with the nationally ranked Rangers through the game's first few minutes, briefly taking a 1-0 lead at the 13:37 mark on a goal from Helen Krause and trailing just 3-2 with five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Regis responded to the early pressure, though, scoring three goals over the final two minutes of the first quarter on scores by junior Bailey Truex (1:58), senior Lucy Johnson (1:27) and junior Meg Hanson (0:08) to create a 6-2 cushion heading into the second quarter.

The Rangers' defense put on the clamps from there as they outscored the Hawks, 8-2, between the second and third quarters to open a 14-4 lead while creating havoc in the midfield, limiting Rockhurst to just 13-of-21 on clear attempts.

"We knew Rockhurst is a team that likes to push the pace and run the ball. We wanted to try to put a lot of pressure on them to slow them down, force the goalie to hold the ball, and run some of their shot clock," Kellner said. "We had a goal of causing six turnovers and we exceeded that in the first half."

GAME NOTES: Regis graduate student Hannah Krats led all players with five goals on Saturday, giving her nine goals between the last two games and 10 total goals during the Rangers' home stand.

Senior midfielder Lucy Johnson netted three goals on Saturday, while graduate student attacker Kyleigh Peoples and Truex each added two goals apiece to give the Rangers four players with multi-goal games.

Freshman attacker Sonja Coomes and junior midfielder Maddie Northcut each scored their first goals of the season on Saturday, respectively. A total of 14 different players have scored goals for Regis through the team's first six games.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte drew the start and earned her second win of the season, stopping four of the seven shots she faced in 30 minutes of action.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will have a chance to rest and recover before continuing their four-game home stand with a 5 p.m. matchup against No. 4 Lindenwood University next Friday. Prior to the game, Regis University and Rangers Athletics will be hosting an official ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration of the new turf fields at 3:40 p.m.

Friday's matchup will be the sixth meeting all time between the nationally ranked titans and the first game of the rivalry to be played in Denver since May 6, 2018.
