Rangers' offense erupts, Kleinsorge tosses gem to lead Rangers to split against CSU Pueblo

DENVER, Colo. — Moved up a day to beat an impending storm, the Regis University baseball team opened up RMAC play with a double-header spit on Friday against Colorado State University Pueblo.

Regis (7-8-1 overall, 1-1 RMAC) rebounded from a tough 15-6 loss to the ThunderWolves (8-8 overall, 1-1 RMAC) in Game One with a resounding 15-3 victory in Game Two.

"CSU Pueblo definitely showed up ready in Game One and we were kind of on our heels from the get-go, trying to fight back from a big deficit early. But I want to give our guys credit for answering and responding back," said Regis head baseball coach, Drew LaComb. "I'm happy with how to came back ready to play that second game and excited we can carry that momentum into tomorrow."

HOW IT HAPPENED: CSU Pueblo got off to a tremendous start in Game One, receiving a lead-off home run from second baseman Jacob Federico and jumping out to a 5-0 lead through the game's first three innings.

The Regis offense was held relatively quiet until the sixth inning when sophomore second baseman Braxton Boyle and redshirt freshman Joey Cicini each delivered RBI singles to get the Rangers on the board.

Regis would add four more runs in the ninth inning via a two-run single by redshirt junior Colten Chase, a RBI walk by Cicini and the first RBI single in the young career of freshman catcher Wes Miller, but were unable to reel back in a CSU Pueblo offense that finished with 15 runs on 22 hits.

The script flipped in Game Two, though, as it was the Rangers who came out swinging early with three straight doubles — Miguel Marquez, Chase and Roger Riley — to plate two quick runs in the home half of the first inning.

Regis would add three more runs in the second, a run in the third, and then blew the game wide open with a five-run fourth inning, highlighted by the first career Grand Slam from freshman shortstop, Zach Daudet.

Daudet launched an 0-1 fastball deep into the parking lot in left-center field, putting an exclamation point on a 3-for-3, 7-RBI performance for the San Diego native, who started Game One in the leadoff spot but moved to the No. 8-hole in the nightcap.

"I think this was a game for Zach to kind of get the monkey off his back. He's been taking a lot of pitches hitting in the leadoff spot, trying to have good at-bats and be a mature hitter as a freshman. That's a big role to put him in," LaComb said. "I felt it was putting him late in counts and making him battle a lot with two strikes. So we moved him down in the order for Game Two and I told to be more aggressive, swing earlier in the count. He found some barrels and hit the ball really hard (Friday)."

Daudet's home run opened the floodgates for the Regis offense as it exploded for four more runs in the fifth-inning, including back-to-back solo shots from Riley and junior first baseman Matt Marlow.

The 15 runs were more than enough support for senior right-hander Justin Kleinsorge as he twirled six innings, allowed one run on four hits and struck out seven en route to his second win of the 2022 season.

"Justin has great stuff. He has a swing and miss fastball and when he can get in the zone, he's very tough," LaComb said of Kleinsorge. "He's a competitor on the mound and he was able to work both sides of the plate today. He's just not an easy guy to hit and we're really happy with the outing he had. Our guys fed off his energy."

GAME NOTES: Graduate student catcher Roger Riley had a sensational afternoon for the Rangers as he posted back to back four-hit games, finishing the day a combined 8-for-10 with four runs scored and four RBI to raise his batting average to a team-best .467 through 16 games.

"Rog has a really great approach and mindset when he goes to the plate, and he's a really good hitter. He finds a way to get on time and he understands pitchers since he is a catcher himself," LaComb said. "I know it sounds crazy, the fact he got eight hits today, but I'm not really surprised because I just expect him to get on base. That's the type of ballplayer he is."

Defensively, the Rangers turned four double-plays on Friday in Game One.

The seven RBI in Game Two by Daudet is tied for the second most in a single game in program history, previously completed by Matt Marlow last May against New Mexico Highlands University.

Redshirt freshman Joey Cicini picked up the first two hits of his career on Friday, finishing 1-for-2 in Game One and adding a RBI double in Game Two.

UP NEXT: Regis and CSU Pueblo will resume its four-game series at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Rawlings Field in Pueblo. The site was changed due to inclement weather expected in the Denver area forecast.

Regis will be scored as the home team for both contests on Saturday.

"It's good adversity for our guys early in the season. I think our guys are getting battle tested," LaComb said. "I think it will help us down the road and I like the way our team responds to adversity. Tomorrow is just another test for them to see what they're capable of doing."
