Rangers fall in one-goal thriller to Grand Valley State in first round of NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — The No. 3 seeded Regis University women's lacrosse team put forth a valiant effort, but were unable to close the door on No. 2 Grand Valley State University on Friday, falling by a 12-11 final in the waning seconds in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

For Regis, the loss was the team's first of the season after a dominant run through the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) regular season and tournament championship. They finish the spring 17-1 overall — two wins via forfeit against Adams State are recorded as no contests by the NCAA — and ranked No. 4 in the country in the latest IWLCA Poll.

Grand Valley State (19-1 overall) advance to Sunday's regional final against hosts University of Indianapolis.

"We're still in a little disbelief about how it ended. It was just an unfortunate ending to a terrific season," said Regis University head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After the two teams ended the first quarter deadlocked at 3-3, the Rangers owned the second quarter as they scored six unanswered goals through the first 10 minutes of the quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 9-3.

Junior attacker Gabby Rothermund got the run started at the 13:56 mark as she finished off a beautiful feed off a fast break opportunity dished by graduate student midfielder, Hannah Krats.

The assist was a part of a huge afternoon for Krats as she led all players with six total points and paced the Regis attack with three goals. Fellow graduate student Kyleigh Peoples (2 goals, 2 assists), Rothermund (2 goals), Bailey Truex (2 goals, 1 assist) and Meg Hanson (1 goal) all netted goals in the first half to help Regis build a 9-4 lead at the break.

"I thought we played a tremendous first quarter. And even though (Grand Valley) got the goal at the end to tie it at 3-3, I thought we controlled the tempo," Kellner said. "Then in the second quarter it really felt like we had the tempo and momentum in our favor. At halftime, we talked about having a 0-0 mentality and not playing complacent. But I think Grand Valley made some really good adjustments."

Grand Valley State chipped away at the lead in a low scoring third quarter (2-0) to make it a 9-6 lead entering the fourth. The Lakers' surge continued over the final 15 minutes as they pulled within one at 10-9 with 10:28 remaining.

Regis sophomore Lily Ferguson scored the Rangers' final goal of the game at the 9:06 mark to stem the tide and make it an 11-9 lead, but unfortunately for Regis the Lakers were relentless as they tied the game at 11-11 with 2:14 remaining before taking their first and only lead of the game at 12-11 with 43 seconds left on a fastbreak score by Sophie Conroy.

"Grand Valley started putting a lot more pressure on us in the second half. Their sticks inside the 8-meter were able to get a lot of knock downs when we were trying to feed cutters," Kellner said. "(The Lakers) also won some key draws. We'd score and want to get the ball back, but we ended up having to play a lot of defense. I think we lost 6-7 draws in a row at one point. So, our defense was playing well and winning us the ball back, but then kind of ran out of steam at the end."

Trailing 12-11, Rothermund was able to win the final draw control of the game to help give the Rangers a chance, but Regis was unable to get off a clean shot attempt before the final horn sounded.

In net, freshman goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch shined in her first NCAA Tournament action as she recorded a career-high 10 saves and two ground balls.

"Brigit is so calm, cool and collected and she plays with a lot of poise for a young goalkeeper," Kellner said. "I think our defense responds to her and she was great today. She made a lot of saves, gave us a lot of opportunities to get the ball back."

GAME NOTES: Grand Valley finished the afternoon with a 35-22 shots advantage, while also earning slight edges in turnovers (21-17) and draw controls (15-11).

The two teams each ended Friday's matchup with 21 ground balls. Hannah Krats led all Rangers with four ground balls, followed by Meg Hanson and Tara Davis with three apiece.

The defensive duo of senior Sydney Landdeck and graduate student Sarah Kate Dhom each recorded two forced turnovers apiece to lead the Regis back row.

UP NEXT: The Rangers, three-time defending RMAC regular season and conference champions, will head home for the summer before turning their attention toward the 2023 season.

Regis honored nine senior and graduate student women's lacrosse athletes on their Senior Day back on April 22. It's a class Kellner credits for elevating the program's standards, on and off the field.

"This class has been to the NCAA Tournament since they were freshmen and were big parts of our Final Four runs (2018 and 2019). They set high expectations for themselves every day because they got a taste of that success so early in their careers. They'll be missed, not only for being exceptional lacrosse players, but as gracious and humble leaders," Kellner said of the 2022 class. "I think they've set the stage for the future. I can't tell you how much we're going to miss them. And I think their legacy is going to continue in our standard and how they raised the bar. They gave that mindset to the younger players behind them. And even to our new freshmen who aren't here yet; they will feel a lot of what those seniors leave behind."
