Rangers earn third straight RMAC Tournament title with 15-8 win over Colorado Mesa

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 3 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team flexed its muscle again Sunday, proving the RMAC conference still runs through Denver and the Rangers as they earned a convincing 15-8 victory over Colorado Mesa University in the RMAC Championship game.

With the win, the Rangers (19-0 overall) put a stamp on their third straight RMAC Tournament title and the fifth in program history (2014, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022); defeating the visiting Mavericks (12-6 overall) in the past three championship matchups.

"I'm extremely grateful and extremely proud. I have the unique pleasure and opportunity to help guide these girls, but they are extremely motivated. They have been on a mission all season. They want to go undefeated, win (RMAC) regular season championship and they wanted to win this RMAC Tournament," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "But the mission doesn't stop here. We're really excited to watch the NCAA Selection Show tonight and see our next opponent."

Regis won't have to wait long to find out its first opponent in the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Tournament as the NCAA will announce official seeds and hosts sites at 6:30 p.m. Mountain Time on Sunday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After surrendering a score to CMU's Taylor Jakeman at the 12:49 mark of the first quarter, the Rangers put the clamps on, defensively, limiting the Mavericks to just one goal over the final 27 minutes and change of the first half.

Graduate student attacker Kyleigh Peoples, the RMAC Tournament MVP, then went to work as she scored four of the next five goals for Regis to put the team up 4-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Peoples was a menace for the CMU defense as she earned six free position opportunities in the first half, converting on four of them, while netting all of her game-high six goals in the first 30 minutes of play.

"We were calling a lot of sets, that are really motion sets, for the ball to move and Kyleigh took the opportunities she had. Her teammates were creating space and Kyleigh was drawing a lot of fouls," Kellner explained. "She's a tremendous finisher and extremely talented off the line on free positions. It was just fun to watch."

As Peoples was finishing at the net, the Rangers were dominating the midfield during the first half as they held an 8-1 advantage in draw controls early on and forced a fast and talented CMU squad into a mediocre 14-of-22 on clear attempts Sunday.

"Colorado Mesa has been one of our biggest challengers in the draw controls this whole season. I thought Gabby (Rothermund) did a great job taking the draw and our circle people making adjustments," Kellner said.

The Rangers' offense continued to fire on all cylinders in the second and third quarters, building a 10-2 advantage at the half and taking their largest lead of the game at 13-2 with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter on a score from senior Alexis Parker.

Parker netted four goals, while the junior tandem of Bailey Truex and Gabby Rothermund added three goals and two goals, respectively, to pace all Rangers.

Sophomore midfielder Lily Ferguson led all players with five ground balls and added four draw controls, while the senior defenseman duo of Sarah Kate Dhom and Maya Quigley tied for the team lead with four caused turnovers.

GAME NOTES: Regis finished with an overwhelming advantage in shots (38-18) and shots on goal (28-13), while also winning the turnover battles, 23-18.

Freshman goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch improved to a spotless 11-0 on the season as she drew the start and made five saves in her 50 minutes of playing time.

UP NEXT: Regis will find out at 6:30 p.m. (MT) Sunday evening where and which opponent the team will face in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

The Rangers will be making their fifth trip in program history to the NCAA postseason, highlighted by Final Four appearances in 2018 and 2019.
