Rangers open 2022 season with 2-1, comeback road win over Texas A&M International

LAREDO, Texas — The Regis University men's soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit at the end of the first half to win their 2022 season opener against Texas A&M International's Dust Devils by a 2-1 final.

How It Happened: Both defenses did their jobs in the beginning of the first half, neither team had any sort of shot until the 29th minute by the Dust Devils' Dylan Krufal. The Dust Devils tried again in the 30th minute but the Rangers' Luca Falagrady would block the shot.

The first goal of the game wouldn't be scored until the 44th minute of the game from the Dust Devils' Lassana Diakite. Regis' first shot on goal came in the 31st minute from Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit and the second from Vilhjalmur Kaldal in the 36th.

The Rangers however, could not be kept quiet for too long. Battling back against a 0-1 deficit, the Rangers offense was electric and outshot the Dust Devils 4-2. The first for the Rangers came by a solo shot from Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit in the 61st minute to the lower middle of the goal.

Kaldal joined in on the fun and scored the winning goal off a penalty kick after being fouled by the Dust Devils' Ozman Ochoa.

The Rangers defense proceeded to take care of business and did not allow more than two shots the entire second half and Luca Falagrady proved to be an impenetrable wall saving both shots on goal.

Game Notes:
  • Rangers outshot the Dust Devils 6-5
  • Falagrady had a total of three saves on the night
  • Both of the Rangers goals came from solo shots, no assists
  • Kaldal led the Rangers with two shots on the night
  • Kaldal and Carlson-Du Toit each scored their first goals of the season.

Looking Ahead: The Rangers continue their 4-game road trip with a match on Saturday, Aug. 27 against Midwestern State University in Laredo, Tex.
