Ranger offense explodes to 7-0 win over South Dakota Mines

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team absolutely erupted on alumni night during Blue & Gold week against South Dakota School of Mines on Friday, shutting the Hardrockers out, 7-0.

The Rangers' (4-5-1 overall, 1-0-1 RMAC) seven goals ties for fourth-highest in program history. The last time Regis scored seven goals was also against SDSM (1-6-2 overall, 0-2-1 RMAC) on October 21, 2021.

"It was a good performance for the guys today. It felt like we did well controlling large portions of the game and ultimately you can never complain about winning 7-0. We got to use a lot of different guys today and I'm really, really proud of everyone in the game tonight. They played well and are able to keep the standard high," said Regis men's head soccer coach, Taylor Diem.

How It Happened: The Rangers offense exploded for four goals in the first half and added three more in the second with five different players finding the back of the net.

Kristian Hooker seemed to have the magic touch as his goal on Friday marked his third match in a row with at least one score. A beautifully placed ball by Elias Taubo met Hooker in the 18-yard box and Hooker quickly put the Rangers up 1-0 in the 18th minute.

"Kris is a leader through and through and I really think he's starting to see the fruits of his labor in terms of production. He always works his butt off and with that I think more opportunities are going to come for him," said Diem.

Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit netted his first of the match off a poorly-saved ball from the goalkeeper that seemed to rebound right to Du Toit's feet as he found the back of the net in the 20th minute. Du Toit is currently the team's leading offensive weapon as he leads in goals (7) and shooting percentage (35 percent).

Throughout the first half, the scoresheet met some new names as Ethan Wilson and Brendan O'Toole both joined the scoring party with their respective goals to bring the total to 4-0. Wilson scored his in the 33rd while O'Toole scored his in the 40th.

First-year defender Diego Berumen saw his first goal as a Ranger on Friday off a well-placed long ball from Carter Boucher that found him at the top of the 18-yard box. Berumen quickly booted the ball into the lower right corner to bring the total to 5-0.

"Diego's a quality player. He hasn't gotten as many minutes as each of the coaches would've liked but he definitely made the most of it today and was rewarded with his goal in the second half. I'm really proud of him and it's good for him to get his first goal as a Regis player and this was the first of many more to come," said Diem.

O'Toole wasn't done adding to the total as he brought the Rangers their second brace of the season as he bent the ball around the left post in the 76th minute and blew past the Hardrockers' diving goalkeeper.

Du Toit also had his own brace of the night, Regis' third overall, with a goal in the 78th minute that shot into the upper left corner of the net coming from a ball from O'Toole that put the Rangers up to 7-0.

"We had a lot of quality guys who were just waiting for those minutes. Everyone that came on did really well and we got a few different guys on the score line. It's good to get some other guys on the scoresheet as well and share the scoring," said Diem.

The Rangers' defense also stepped up as they limited the Hardrocker defense to a total of eight shots on the night. Only three of those eight shots found their way to the goal. Friday's shutout of the Hardrockers was also the Rangers' first clean sheet of the season.

"We want to try and find a way to keep a zero on the scorecard for the other team. As a team we're definitely happy to see that and I felt like everyone who came in did a really good job eliminating the opportunity and taking care of first and second balls," said Diem.

Game Notes:
  • Elias Taubo currently leads the Rangers in assists with three
  • Greg L'Hommedieu had his first start as a Ranger at goalkeeper and finished the night with three saves
  • Regis posted a season-high 15 shots on goal
  • The Rangers are currently outshooting opponents 137-115
  • Diego Berumen posted his first career goal
  • Kristian Hooker led the team in shots on goal with four, followed by Du Toit and Wilson both with two

Up Next: After opening conference play with four points, the Rangers face the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Thursday, Sept. 29 in Colorado Springs followed by Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sunday, Oct. 2.

"Both UCCS and Pueblo are going to be every good teams. We'll get back to work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and be ready to go Thursday. I think the message to the guys is always taking it one game at a time," said Diem.
