No. 9 Rangers open 2023 with 15-11 road win over No. 15 Lynn

BOCA RATON, Florida — The No. 9 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team opened its 2023 season in style on Saturday, heading down south and knocking off No. 15 Lynn University, 15-11.

Regis (1-0 overall) had seven different players score goals on Saturday, including four different players with hat tricks, as it used a balanced effort to methodically put the Lady Fighting Nights (2-1 overall) away.

"It feels so good to be back competing. The team has worked extremely hard and gearing up for strong competition early in the season," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "Lynn plays a very aggressive high pressure on ball backer zone. Our players made great adjustments with selfless attacking plays by moving the ball to find back side and open attackers."

HOW IT HAPPENED: After Lynn took a brief 1-0 lead at the 11:35 mark of the first quarter, the Rangers would never trail again as they scored four of the next five goals — scores from junior Bailey Truex, senior Meg Hanson, junior Lily Ferguson and graduate student Lucy Johnson — en route to owning a 4-3 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

The Rangers would extend their lead to 8-6 at the half and created a little breathing room in the third quarter as they scored the first four goals of the period to balloon their lead to 12-6.

Lynn would respond, cutting the Regis lead to two goals at 13-11 with 6:27 remaining in the fourth, but the Rangers answered with scores from Meg Hanson and true freshman Shea Murphy to put the game away and seal the 15-11 final.

The quartet of Hanson, Ferguson, Johnson and Murphy would all score three goals to pace the Regis offense, with Johnson adding two assists for a game-high five points.

Senior attacker Gabby Rothermund (1 goal, two assists), Truex (1 goal, three assists) and sophomore Justine Spahr would round out the Regis goal scorers in the victory.

GAME NOTES:

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch earned the win and made three saves
Regis finished with a 27-19 advantage in shot attempts, including a 23-14 edge in shots on goal
The Rangers won the turnover battle, 16-11
Regis finished 16-for-18 on clear attempts
Lynn had a slight 15-13 edge in ground balls
Ferguson added to her big game with team highs in ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (3)

UP NEXT: The Rangers will have 10 days off before returning to action on Tuesday, February 28^th on the road against McKendree University. Regis defeated the Hawks, 19-7, in Denver last March.

First draw is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) that Tuesday out in Kansas City, Missouri.
