No. 7 Rangers open weekend with dominant 17-2 win over Notre Dame College

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — The No. 7 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team began its two-day road swing to Indiana in style on Saturday, racking up season highs in goals (17) and shot attempts (33) in a convincing 17-2 neutral site win over Notre Dame College (Ohio).

Eight different Rangers (5-0 overall) would score on the afternoon, led by sophomore Sonja Coomes with a career-high four goals and five total points.

The four goals were the first four of 2023 for Coomes, who entered the day with two goals and six assists in 12 appearances last season as a true freshman.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis featured a balanced offensive attack all afternoon as the team scored four or more goals in all four quarters.

The Rangers leaped out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and carried an 8-2 lead into the halftime locker rooms.

In the second half, it was all Rangers as they outscored the Falcons (0-5 overall), 9-0, over the final 30 minutes.

Sophomore midfielder Madeline Schallmoser and senior midfielder Bailey Truex each netted hat tricks for the Rangers on Saturday, as well, while senior attacker Meg Hanson and sophomore midfielder Becky Goetsch each added two goals apiece.

A trio of Regis upperclassmen in senior attacker Gabby Rothermund, graduate student midfielder Lucy Johnson and junior attacker Tia Krats all chipped in a goal of their own to round out the high-power Regis attack.

Defensively, Regis limited the Falcons to just seven total shot attempts and forced a season-high 24 turnovers. The Rangers' defensive unit also dominated the ground ball category, 24-10, led by Schallmoser and Meg Hanson and senior defenseman Sarah Hanson with four ground balls apiece.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch earned her fifth win of the season, making two saves in the first half, while junior Elizabeth Myotte made one save and didn't allow a score over the final 30 minutes.

Sunday will mark the third all-time meeting between the Rangers and Greyhounds. Regis holds a 2-1 series advantage with wins in 2019 (17-14) and 2018 (21-6).
