No. 7 Rangers upend No. 1 UIndy to put bow on undefeated non-conference run

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — During a week in March known for top-seeded upsets across college athletics, the No. 7 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team added its own March Madness moment, going on the road and knocking off No. 1 ranked University of Indianapolis, 14-12.

With the victory, the Rangers (6-0 overall) stayed undefeated on the spring and moved to 3-1 all-time against the Greyhounds (8-1 overall), including three straight wins dating back to the 2018 season.

"We're obviously very elated with the win. We got ourselves into a little bit of a jam early down a few goals, but the team showed a lot of resilience and they never waivered in the confidence they felt and I felt. We still felt very in control," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "I thought our defense was tremendous and I thought we did a great job staying together and focused on the next play. Their mindset took us to victory. They were really mindful of staying present and playing together."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers would have to battle through a little adversity in the first half as, after the two teams end the first quarter tied 2-2, the Greyhounds were able to create a little cushion at 8-4 heading into halftime.

Regis wouldn't waiver, though, as the team chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter, inching back within one with 5:35 remaining in the third at 9-8 on a score from junior midfielder Lily Ferguson.

UIndy answered with the final two goals of the third quarter to grab an 11-8 advantage. But the fourth quarter would belong solely to the Rangers.

Regis opened the fourth with three quick scores in just 3:18 of game time, evening the game at 11-11 on a free position goal by sophomore midfielder Madeline Schallmoser. Just two minutes later, the Rangers retook the lead at 12-11 following the third goal of the game from freshman Shea Murphy; the team's first lead since 4-3 in the second quarter.

"We did a great job making the little adjustments throughout the game. We didn't add any plays or make any major adjustments, and we did a much better job transitioning from the defensive to offensive side of the field in the second half," Kellner said. "We were winning more draws (in the fourth quarter) and we wanted to attack from high, so we switched up some of our offense, and then we did a great job taking care of the ball when we got it on defense and transitioned to the attacking end."

UIndy's lone goal of the fourth came at the 5:36 mark, briefly tying the game again at 12-12, but the Rangers responded with a goal from Ferguson at the 4:54 mark and the dagger at 1:58 from senior midfielder Bailey Truex that put the Rangers on top for good at 14-12.

For Truex, the late insurance goal was one of her career-high six goals on the afternoon to go with her five draw controls.

"Bailey, end to end, does a little bit of everything on the field. She's on every draw circle, on every deep possession, and on every attack. She is probably the hardest working player I've ever seen and she played (Sunday) the way she practices," Kellner said. "It was really special to watch her. The confidence she played with today I think really held and elevated our team's confidence."

Senior attacker Meg Hanson and graduate student Lucy Johnson each added goals — two of six different Rangers to score — while Johnson and senior Gabby Rothermund led all Rangers with two assists apiece.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch earned her sixth win of the spring with seven saves.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished the afternoon with a 19-11 advantage in draw controls
  • The Rangers were 15-for-18 in clear attempts, 9-for-9 in the second half
  • After committing 12 turnovers in the first half, Regis only had four in the second half
  • The two teams finished with 28 shots apiece
  • Ferguson led Regis with six draw controls
  • Senior defenseman Tara Davis paced Regis with three ground balls
UP NEXT: Following their undefeated non-conference run, the Rangers will now turn their attention toward the beginning of the RMAC schedule and the team's first home game of the spring this Friday against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

"We're going to take 24 hours and celebrate this win. That's what we do after every game, give ourselves 24 hours, then we'll be back to the drawing board next week. We'll work on some of the things we know we need to work on and try to continue to improve on what we're doing well right now," Kellner said. "We're excited to be home for the first time next week and play against conference opponents. Our fans traveled really well to Indianapolis and we hope people come watch us play on Friday."
