No. 2 Rangers knock off UCCS in Friday's RMAC opener

DENVER, Colo. — After nearly six weeks of waiting, the No. 2 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team was finally able to take the field on its home turf, literally, grinding out a 15-7 victory against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in the Rangers' home opener and RMAC opener under the lights.

With the win, Regis (7-0 overall, 1-0 RMAC) remained undefeated on the spring, while the loss dropped the visiting Mountain Lions to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the RMAC.

"It felt really great to be home under the lights and playing in front of our fans," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "We've been road warriors so far this year, so it was really nice to be able to get in front of the home crowd."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis got out of the gates a bit slow on Friday, settling for a 1-1 tie at the end of the first quarter, before ramping up in the second quarter to outscore the Mountain Lions, 4-1, and take a 5-2 advantage into the half.

In the third quarter, senior midfielder Bailey Truex, the reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, helped jumpstart a six-goal quarter for the Rangers with back-to-back scores at the 11:55 and 10:59 marks to create a 7-2 cushion.

Sophomore attacker Justine Spahr, freshman midfielder Maggie Schipfer, and the senior attacker duo of Meg Hanson and Gabby Rothermund would all add goals in the third quarter, as well, ballooning the Regis lead to 11-2 with 7:28 remaining in the period.

UCCS would not go away, though, as it rattled off four of the next five goals to pull back within five at 12-7 with 4:32 remaining.

Regis would respond, closing the game on a mini 3-0 run with scores from Sonja Coomes and two free position goals by Becky Goetsch to put a bow on the 15-7 final.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch earned her seventh win of the season, stopping five of the seven shots she faced in the first half before giving way to junior Elizabeth Myotte (two saves).

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis had a total of 11 different players score a goal on Friday, led by the quartet of Spahr, Truex, Goetsch and Coomes with two goals apiece.
  • Rothermund and junior Lily Ferguson each finished with a goal and team-leading two assists
  • Ferguson completed her well-rounded evening with four ground balls, four caused turnovers and four draw controls (tied with Rothermund)
  • Graduate student defender Maya Quigley tied Ferguson for the team lead with four caused turnovers to go with two ground balls
  • Regis outshot the Mountain Lions, 36-17
  • The Rangers won the turnover battle, 23-15
UP NEXT: Regis will now prepare to head back out on the road next weekend for matchups against Colorado State University Pueblo (4 p.m. Friday) and Fort Lewis College (12 p.m. Sunday) before returning to face rival No. 24 ranked Colorado Mesa University at home on Thursday, April 6.
