No. 3 Regis outscores CSU Pueblo 9-0 in first quarter, cruise to 19-3 road win

PUEBLO, Colo. — Playing in its first road RMAC game of 2023, the No. 3 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team came out swinging, scoring nine first-quarter goals en route to a 19-3 romp of Colorado State University Pueblo on Friday.

With the win, the nationally ranked Rangers (8-0 overall, 2-0 RMAC) remained undefeated on the spring while the ThunderWolves (1-6 overall, 0-3 RMAC) are still in search of their first conference win of 2023.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After getting off to a sluggish start in their home opener — scoring one first-quarter goals in a 15-7 win against UCCS — the Rangers' offense was flying from the opening draw as junior midfielder Lily Ferguson notched the game's first goal just 42 seconds in.

A total of seven different Rangers would score in the first half as Regis raced out to a 9-0 lead after the first quarter, and an 11-0 advantage at the 12:00 mark of the second, before CSU Pueblo was able to get on the scoresheet with 4:36 remaining in the half.

Regis would enjoy an 11-3 lead at the break before putting the game away with 4-0 scoring runs in the third quarter and fourth quarter, respectively, to wrap up the 19-3 final.

As a team, the Rangers finished with a 16-11 edge in draw controls — led by a career-high seven from senior midfielder Bailey Truex — and were nearly flawless on clear attempts, finishing 15-for-16 on the afternoon.

Truex and graduate student midfielder Lucy Johnson paced the high-powered Rangers' offense with four goals apiece, while the trio of sophomore Madeline Schallmoser, Becky Goetsch and Tia Krats all netted two scores.

Senior attacker Meg Hanson scored one goal and dished out three of the team's season-high 10 assists.

Defensively, Truex and senior defenseman Sarah Hanson each forced two turnovers and seven different Regis players all scooped up one ground ball.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch earned her eighth win of the spring, stopping five of the eight shots she faced in the first half.

Regis dominated the shots category, 37-14, including 33-8 for shots on goal
The Regis defense limited CSU Pueblo to a mere 12-for-21 on clear attempts
Regis outshot CSU Pueblo, 17-2, in the dominant first quarter

UP NEXT: The Rangers conclude their southern Colorado road trip on Sunday when they take on Fort Lewis College. First draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Ray Dennison Memorial Field in Durango.
