Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | David Wilson, Assistant AD-Communications

No. 8 Rangers square off against a familiar face, grind out an 11-7 road win over Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Missouri — The No. 8 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team stayed undefeated on its current spring break road trip, grinding out an 11-7 road win over Missouri Western State University during a Thursday matinee to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

"It was a battle for sure. We really had to keep our focus on winning the little battles on at a time, whether that was getting a ground ball or a defensive stop," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "Missouri Western was really physical and I was really proud of our team for how hard we played and kept our head up during the times things weren't going our way."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Missouri Western (1-2 overall), coached by former Regis star and First Team All-American Jessica Berg (2019-2021), was able to challenge the Rangers as they Griffons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and were tied with the Rangers at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Freshman midfielder Shea Murphy gave the Rangers their first lead of the game at the 11:47 mark of the second quarter with her team-leading eighth goal of the spring.

Junior midfielder Lily Ferguson, who led all Regis players with a hat trick Thursday, and graduate student midfielder Lucy Johnson each added second quarter goals as well to help Regis take a 6-4 lead into the half.

"Facing one of our former players, Jessica Berg, she did a great job having her team prepared and we had to make a lot of adjustments, especially after that first quarter," Kellner said. "Their goalie was a puzzle we had solve and I thought she played tremendous and kept her team in it."

Nursing a 7-6 lead entering the fourth, the Rangers were able to solve that puzzle to begin the fourth as they rattled off four straight goals, including two from Ferguson and scores from Madeline Schallmoser and Gabby Rothermund, to take an 11-6 advantage and put the game away with 1:12 remaining.

"We were not backing down, staying in the moment and present, and we changed some things and plays around, offensively, that helped open some things up," Kellner said of the fourth-quarter run. "We were getting good opportunities and shooting a lot during the game, but we really made that extra step, kept our feet moving, to put the ball behind that goalie."

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished with a 30-20 shots advantage, including a 27-14 edge in shots on goal
  • Schallmoser and Johnson each scored two goals apiece, joining Ferguson with multi-goal games
  • Junior attacker Tia Krats and senior midfielder Bailey Truex each added a goal apiece to round of the Regis scoring
  • Schallmoser tallied two assists to finish with a team-high four points
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch stopped seven of the 14 shots she faced to pick up her third win of the season
UP NEXT: The Rangers will conclude their spring break road trip on Sunday when they play a big-time neutral site game against No. 10 ranked Grand Valley State University, hosted by Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo. First draw is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Sunday's matinee will be the sixth matchup all-time between the two programs, with Regis currently holding a 3-2 series advantage. Grand Valley State edged the Rangers, 12-12, in last season's NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

"We're excited to play them. Our first two games we played against zone defense, then Missouri Western played man-to-man (Thursday), and Grand Valley is typically a man-to-man defense so I think we'll be ready and prepared," Kellner said. "They have a lot of returners back. I think we know them pretty well, but I think they also know us pretty well too. It's a game we're really looking forward to play and we'll continue to try and stay present during all the little moments in that game, as well."
