No. 8 Rangers dominate second quarter, earn 14-10 victory in rematch with No. 10 Grand Valley State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Two of the top-10 women's lacrosse teams in the country squared off in a Sunday matinee out in Grand Junction on Sunday, with the No. 8 ranked Regis University coming away with a 14-10 statement win over No. 10 Grand Valley State University.

Sunday's clash was a rematch of last year's NCAA Division II Tournament first round game, a tight 12-11 win by Grand Valley State (2-2 overall). With the win, Regis improves to 4-0 in the early going of 2023 and moves to 4-2 all-time against the Lakers.

"I thought our team played tremendously. Our defense was the glue when things weren't working out well on offense in the second half, but we kept pressuring the ball and Brigit (Goetsch) made some really big stops when we needed them," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "Then our attack in the first half, especially that second quarter, put us in a really good position."

HOW IT HAPPENED: After the two perennial powers were deadlocked at 3-3 after the first quarter, the Rangers would dominate the next 15 minutes as they outscored the Lakers, 7-1, in the second quarter to build a 10-4 cushion at the half.

Senior midfielder Bailey Truex, graduate student midfielder Lucy Johnson and junior midfielder Lily Ferguson all tallied two goals apiece during the Rangers' second quarter blitz. That trio would all tie for the team high in goals Sunday with three apiece.

The seventh goal in the Rangers' second-quarter outburst came courtesy of sophomore Madeline Schallmoser for one of her two scores on the afternoon.

"We shared the ball very well and our movement was great. We kept attacking and re-attacking and got to the free position line quite a bit. Then we were able to capitalize by scoring on a lot of our free positions," said Kellner, who's team finished 6-for-9 in free position shot attempts Sunday. "Then our draw team was outstanding winning a lot of 50-50 balls. Grand Valley has a lot of speed, but I thought we did a nice job countering that. We love playing 'make it, take it,' and one of our goals was to go on runs, which we were able to do in that second quarter."

Grand Valley State would trim the Rangers lead down to 11-7 entering the fourth quarter, but were never able to inch any closer than that the rest of the way as the Regis defensive core and sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch slammed the door shut on the 14-10 final.

Goetsch finished with a season-high nine saves while senior defenseman Tara Davis shined with team highs of three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished with an 18-10 advantage in draw controls, led by Ferguson with a team-high nine
  • The Rangers outshot Grand Valley, 30-28, and 20-19 in shots on goal
  • Regis held a 9-3 advantage in free position shots
UP NEXT: After an undefeated 3-0 road trip during Spring Break, the Rangers will have next week off before returning to action on Saturday, March 18 with a road game against Notre Dame College, hosted on the campus of UIndy. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. Mountain Time.
