Johnson scores five first-half goals, No. 3 Rangers pull away in 23-9 road win over UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A few April showers and chilly spring temperatures did little to slow down the red-hot No. 3 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team on Saturday as the Rangers scored a season-high 23 goals in their 23-9 road win over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

Regis (12-0 overall, 6-0 RMAC) also registered a season-high 45 shot attempts in the win over the Mountain Lions (4-9 overall, 3-3 RMAC) and have scored 43 goals over the past two games.

HOW IT HAPPENED: As they did in the first matchup between the two teams back on March 24, the Mountain Lions were able to hang tough with the Rangers in the first quarter on Saturday.

UCCS, which forced a 1-1 tie through one quarter during the March game in Denver, briefly held leads of 3-2 and 4-3 and only trailed the powerful Rangers, 5-4, at the end of the first 15 minutes on Saturday.

Regis would respond with a strong second quarter, outscoring UCCS by a 9-3 margin to double-up the Mountain Lions heading into the halftime break at 14-7. The Rangers closed the half scoring five of the last six goals, including three scores during that stretch by graduate student midfielder, Lucy Johnson.

That scoring burst put a cap on a sensational first half for Johnson, who scored all five of her goals Saturday in the opening 30 minutes. She'd add an assist to lead all players with six total points.

The Rangers would feed off that momentum to start the second half, notching the first three tallies of the third quarter to balloon their lead to 17-7 on a woman-up goal by Lily Ferguson at the 7:50 mark to force a running clock.

UCCS would fight back to get the deficit down to nine at 18-9 entering the fourth quarter, but the Rangers put the game away with a 5-0 shutout in the final frame to put a bow on the 23-9 final.

Ferguson and senior midfielder Bailey Truex would each have monster games of their own in the attacking third as the duo each netted four goals and added one assist apiece.

The quartet of senior attacker Gabby Rothermund (2 goals, 2 assists), freshman Maggie Schipfer (2 goals), senior attacker Meg Hanson (2 goals) and junior attacker Tia Krats (2 goals) would all add multi-goal performances, while freshman Shea Murphy and sophomore Justine Spahr each added one goal and one assist apiece to round out the nine different Rangers with goals on Saturday.

Defensively, Ferguson added to her sensational afternoon with a team-high five ground balls and she scooped up a season-high 10 draw controls; one shy of her career-high of 11 set last spring against Concordia-St. Paul.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch earned her 12th win of the season, making three saves in the first half, while junior Elizabeth Myotte added three saves of her own in the second half.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis dominated shot attempts, 45-18, including a 38-15 margin in shots on goal
  • The 45 shots tops the Rangers' previous season high of 40 that came last Saturday in a 20-4 win over Westminster College
  • Regis won the draw controls (25-10) and ground ball (23-17) battles
  • Each team committed 11 turnovers
UP NEXT: Regis will continue its current three-game road trip next weekend when the team heads west to square off against Westminster College (7 p.m. Friday) in Salt Lake City before concluding the trip with a matchup against Colorado Mesa University (1 p.m. Sunday) in Grand Junction.
