Becky Goetsch scores career-high four goals, No. 4 Rangers roll to 21-3 road win against Griffins

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The No. 4 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team opened up its weekend road trip with a resounding 21-3 road win over Westminster College under the lights in Salt Lake City.

Regis (13-0 overall, 7-0 RMAC) dominated the Griffins (3-5 overall, 3-5 RMAC) early, exploding for nine first-quarter goals, and never looked back en route to sweeping the season series.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Holding a 2-1 lead a third of the way through the first quarter, Regis rattled off seven straight goals over the final 9:06 to balloon the lead to 9-1.

Sophomore midfielder Becky Goetsch, a first-year transfer out of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, had her best night in Regis navy and gold as she led all Rangers with a career-high four goals on just six shot attempts including two goals coming during that 7-0 first-quarter run.

Senior attacker Meg Hanson and freshman midfielder Shea Murphy each added hat tricks of their own with the duo each scoring two of their three goals during a 6-0 blitz from the Rangers in the third quarter that gave Regis a 19-2 lead entering the fourth.

Regis also received multi-goal games from sophomores Madeline Schallmoser and Justine Spahr, as well as junior midfielder Lily Ferguson.

On the defensive end, Schallmoser paced all Regis players with two caused turnovers to go with five ground balls and two draw controls, while senior attacker Gabby Rothermund led all Rangers with a career-high six ground balls to compliment her goal and assist.

Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte, drawing her first start of 2023, earned the victory between the pipes as she stopped five of the eight shots she faced. Myotte currently leads all RMAC goalkeepers with a .559 save percentage across eight appearances this spring.

GAME NOTES:

Regis finished with a dominating 37-9 advantage in shot attempts
The Rangers won the turnover battle, 14-10
Regis also edged Westminster in ground balls (26-16) and draw controls (13-7)
After going 11-for-13 in clear attempts, Regis boosted its RMAC-leading clear percentage (87.3%)

UP NEXT: The Rangers will look to take a commanding lead in the RMAC standings on Sunday when they square off against Colorado Mesa University (8-5 overall, 7-0 RMAC) out in Grand Junction. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Regis currently owns the tiebreaker over the Mavericks, thanks to a 17-11 win in Denver back on April 6, and can take a two-game lead with a win with two regular season games remaining as the program continues its chase for a fourth straight RMAC regular season title.
