No. 4 Rangers make furious rally to force OT, but fall by 14-13 final to Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The No. 4 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team hit its first snag of the 2023 season on Sunday, falling by a 14-13 final in overtime to Colorado Mesa University.

Sunday's game marked the first loss of the spring for the Rangers (13-1 overall, 7-1 RMAC) and the team's first conference loss since April 15, 2018, while the win was the first for the Mavericks (9-5 overall, 8-1 RMAC) against Regis across 29 all-time matchups.

Colorado Mesa currently owns a half-game lead over Regis in the RMAC standings with the Rangers having two regular season games remaining this upcoming week against CSU Pueblo (4 p.m. Wednesday) and Fort Lewis College (7 p.m. Friday).

HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado Mesa was able to get off to a fast start Sunday as the Mavericks scored four first quarter goals to take a 4-1 lead after one.
CMU would maintain a 6-3 lead at the half, and led by as many as six goals at 11-5 with 5:06 remaining in the third quarter, before the Rangers would mount a furious comeback.

Freshman midfielder Shea Murphy was able to net a goal in the final seconds of the third quarter that would spark a 5-0 run for the Rangers as action moved to the fourth.

Murphy would add a second goal in the scoring run, while back-to-back scores from sophomore Madeline Schallmoser pulled the Rangers all the way back to within one at 11-10 with 9:00 remaining.

Trailing 13-11 in the final 30 seconds of regulation, the Rangers again responded with clutch goals from senior attacker Meg Hanson (0:17) and Schallmoser (0:04) in the closing seconds, sandwiched around a critical draw control win by Lily Ferguson, to force overtime with the score deadlocked at 13-13.

Unfortunately for Regis, the Mavericks would capitalize on a turnover and scored on the only shot of the overtime period at the 3:31 mark — a goal from Peyton Ivey —  to take the 14-13 final.

Schallmoser and graduate student midfielder Lucy Johnson paced the Regis offense with three goals apiece, while the trio of Murphy, Ferguson and Hanson each added two scores. Senior midfielder Bailey Truex was the sixth Regis goal scorer.

Schallmoser also shined, defensively, as she tied for the team lead in ground balls (4) and caused turnovers (3).

Johnson added four ground balls and Ferguson, who finished with 10 of the Rangers' 19 draw controls, also forced three caused turnovers.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished with a 31-26 shots advantage
  • Colorado Mesa won the turnover battle, 24-22
  • Regis won 9 of 10 draws in the fourth quarter and edged the Mavericks, 19-12
  • Colorado Mesa had the edge in ground balls, 27-24
UP NEXT: Regis will look to regroup and close out the regular season strong this week as it hosts CSU Pueblo at 4 p.m. Wednesday before welcoming in Fort Lewis College for Senior Night on Friday at 7 p.m.
