No. 7 Rangers respond with resounding 22-2 win over CSU Pueblo to begin final home stand

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 7 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team returned to its winning ways on Wednesday, scoring 14 first-half goals en route to a 22-2 thumping of Colorado State University Pueblo to begin the final home stand of the regular season.

Regis (14-1 overall, 8-1 RMAC), coming off its first regular season loss since 2018 last Sunday against Colorado Mesa University, responded with a dominant performance Wednesday as 10 different players scored and eight different players had assists in the win over the ThunderWolves (1-12 overall, 0-9 RMAC).

"I was really glad we had another game so quickly after our last one. I think it allowed us to get our confidence back, our feet underneath us and it's always great to be back home," said Regis head coach, Sarah Kellner. "It's always a challenging week with finals and Senior Day coming up, but I thought we had a very complete, team win."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis took control of the game early as it stormed out to an 8-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and netted the game's first 11 goals before CSU Pueblo was able to get on the board at the 11:00 mark of the second.

Regis freshman Shea Murphy, senior attacker Meg Hanson and senior midfielder Bailey Truex all scored two goals during the 11-0 burst. The trio would all finish with a hat trick on the afternoon.

The Rangers would balloon their lead to 14-2 at the half before salting the game away after halftime, outscoring the visiting ThunderWolves, 8-0, over the final 30 minutes of action.

After committing seven turnovers in the first quarter, the Rangers limited the giveaways to just four turnovers over the final three quarters; a points of emphasis for the team after committing 24 turnovers last Sunday.

"We talked about taking care of the ball, the discipline of that and connecting by communicating," Kellner said. "We really prioritize the 50-50 balls and using names with our passes when we were in our attacking end."

Sophomore midfielder Becky Goetsch had one of her best performances in a Rangers' uniform as she scored a game-high four goals, tying her career high previously set against Westminster College, on just five shot attempts while adding one caused turnover.

Regis also received multi-goal performances from sophomore Madeline Schallmoser (2G, 2A), graduate student Lucy Johnson (2G, 2A) and junior attacker Tia Krats (2G).

Senior attacker Gabby Rothermund added a goal and team-high three assists, moving her into a tie with Hilary Duda for fourth place on the career assists leaderboard with 93.

Defensively, graduate student Maya Quigley led all Rangers with three ground balls to go with a caused turnover, while Schallmoser forced four CSU Pueblo giveaways from the midfield.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch stopped two of the four shots she faced in the first half en route to improving to 13-1 on the season, while junior Elizabeth Myotte made four saves in a spotless second half of work.

UP NEXT: The Rangers will conclude the regular season, looking for a share of the RMAC regular season title, when they host Fort Lewis College at 7 p.m. Friday for Senior Night.

"Friday night lights, big energy and one of our team words this year is 'electric,'" Kellner said when asked what she expects Friday. "We're looking forward to honoring our seniors and Fort Lewis is a tremendous opponent. They've continued to improve, had some big wins at home, so we look forward to the competition."
