No. 7 Regis women's lacrosse earns at least a share of the RMAC regular season title with 19-5 win over FLC

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 7 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team celebrated its senior class in style on Friday, earning an 19-5 win over Fort Lewis College under the lights and locking up at least a share of the program's fourth straight RMAC regular season championship.

Regis (15-1 overall, 9-1 RMAC) moves into first place in the RMAC standings, a half-game ahead of Colorado Mesa University which still has one regular season game remaining Saturday against Westminster College.

If the Mavericks win that game, they would share the RMAC regular season title with the Rangers while Regis earns the No. 1 seed for next week's tournament per the goal differential tie-breaker.

"It's been an awesome showing by our senior class all year and they've been phenomenal examples of what it means to be a Regis lacrosse player," said Regis head coach, Sarah Kellner. "They do all the little things well, they're disciplined and I'm really proud and happy we could honor them. We are excited to be able to host the tournament again and we look forward to being able to continue competing."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Fort Lewis (3-9 overall, 3-6 RMAC) hung tough with the Rangers through the opening 15 minutes thanks in large part to play of goalkeeper Averi Basso.

After holding a narrow 5-3 lead, the Rangers' offense got rolling in the second quarter as they outscored the Skyhawks, 7-0, to capture at 12-3 lead at the half and put the game away.

"I think there were a lot of scoring opportunities throughout the game and I didn't think we were very disciplined in our shot selection that first quarter. Averi Basso is a talented goalie, she's aggressive and made a lot of stops early. But we were able to make the adjustment in the second quarter," Kellner said.

Graduate student midfielder Lucy Johnson led the charge as she scored all five of her goals in the first half, including three straight scores between the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to jumpstart the offense.

"I'm so happy Lucy decided to take her fifth year. She's had a lot of schooling as a Pharmacy major so it's been a big commitment to be a student-athlete with all her academics, but she continues to have more fun than anyone on and off the field," Kellner said. "She brings a lot of energy, is a great teammate and I'm glad she was able to have this moment tonight."

True freshman Shea Murphy and senior midfielder Bailey Truex would each tally hat tricks of their own, while eight different Rangers would add one goal apiece to round out a night that saw 11 different players crack the scoresheet.

Junior midfielder Lily Ferguson scored one of those goals to go with a team-high three assists, four ground balls and eight draw controls.

Defensively, senior Tara Davis led the back row with five caused turnovers while her fellow graduating  defensemen Sarah Hanson (1 caused turnover, 1 ground ball) and Maya Quigley (1 caused turnover, 2 ground balls) also had strong performances in their final regular season home games.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch earned her 14th win of the spring after making one save in the first half. Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte came on in relief for the second half and stopped three of the five shots she faced.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis outshot the Skyhawks, 40-11
  • The Rangers won the turnover battle, 22-16, and only committed six giveaways in the second half
  • Regis was 16-for-17 in clear attempts while the Rangers' defense limited the Skyhawks to just 13-for-19
  • RU would also win the draw controls (17-10) and ground ball (26-18) battles
UP NEXT: The Rangers will host the RMAC Tournament next weekend at the Regis Turf Fields in Denver. Semi-final action is scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, with the championship game to be held at 12 p.m. Sunday. A full bracket for the RMAC Tournament will be released on Monday by the conference.

"I think something that we're still looking to polish is that consistent play for all 60 minutes. We've gotten off to a couple slow starts and we want to be able to come out strong and finish strong," Kellner said. "We want to be able to go the full 60 of strong, Regis style lacrosse in the postseason."
