Top-seeded Rangers knock off Westminster, punch their ticket to Sunday's RMAC Tournament title game

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 7 ranked and top-seeded Regis University women's lacrosse team punched its ticket to its ninth straight RMAC Tournament title game on Friday, jumping out early and rolling to a 20-6 victory over No. 4 seed Westminster College in the RMAC Tournament semi-finals.

Regis (16-1 overall) will advance to take on No. 2 seed Colorado Mesa University in Sunday's RMAC Tournament championship game, scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Regis Turf Fields in Denver.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis dominated the first quarter of play as they scored the game's first seven goals — by six different players — to take a commanding 7-0 lead with 3:03 remaining in the quarter following a score by sophomore Sonja Coomes.

The Rangers would go on to build a 10-2 lead at the end of the opening period, and increased their advantage to 13-2 at the halftime break.

Regis graduate student attacker Lucy Johnson, honored before the game for winning the RMAC Attacker of the Year, tallied all of her team-high four goals in the opening half on just six shot attempts.

Senior midfielder Bailey Truex matched Johnson for the team lead with four goals in the opening 30 minutes to help pace a Regis offense that doubled-up the visiting Griffins, 38-19, in shot attempts.

Westminster College came out of the halftime break strong, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 13-5, but the Rangers answered back with their own 3-0 run to end the period and send the game into the fourth at 16-5 with a running clock.

True freshman Shea Murphy, playing in her first postseason game, scored two goals while adding two caused turnovers and two ground balls from the midfield position.

Sophomore midfielder Madeline Schallmoser also had a well-rounded performance for the Rangers as she scored two goals, scooped up a team-high four ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Fellow sophomores Becky Goetsch and Justine Spahr each added two goals apiece, as well, and junior attacker Tia Krats tallied two scores to round out the Rangers with multi-goal performances.

Coomes and senior attacker Meg Hanson each scored one goal; two of nine different goal scorers for the Rangers.

In net, sophomore goaltender Brigit Goetsch earned the win after stopping four of six shots in the first half. Junior goalie Elizabeth Myotte put the bow on the victory with five more saves in the second half.

GAME NOTES:
  • The Rangers racked up 12 assists on 19 goals.
  • Regis edged the Griffins, 20-19, in ground balls.
  • Led by senior Gabby Rothermund's seven draw controls, the Rangers dominated the category, 21-7.
UP NEXT: The Rangers will now prepare for a rematch of the 2022 RMAC Tournament title game against co-regular season champions, Colorado Mesa University. Regis and CMU split the season series, with the Rangers earning a 17-11 win in Denver back on April 6.

First draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. Sunday at the Regis Turf Fields in Denver.
