Regis women's lacrosse locks up fourth straight RMAC Tournament title with 12-4 win over Colorado Mesa

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 7 ranked and top-seeded Regis University women's lacrosse program added the latest chapter to a dynasty still very much in its prime, winning the Rangers fourth straight RMAC Tournament title on Sunday with a convincing 12-4 victory over No. 2 seed Colorado Mesa University at the Regis Turf Fields in Denver.

Regis (17-1 overall) had seven different goal scorers and led wire-to-wire on Sunday, avenging a 14-13 road loss to the Mavericks (11-6 overall) suffered in April, in what was a rematch of the 2022 RMAC Tournament title game.

"It really took an amazing effort end-to-end, from our attack to our goaltending. And I really credit Colorado Mesa. They are a strong team and gave us everything they had," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "We made some wonderful adjustments from the last time we played them and I couldn't be more proud of the effort our team put out."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The two RMAC rivals played each other tight through the opening 15 minutes, with the Rangers scoring the first two goals of the game courtesy of junior midfielder Lily Ferguson and true freshman Shea Murphy, each of whom were named to the RMAC All-Tournament team following the game Sunday.

Colorado Mesa answered with two scores to briefly tie at the 8:39 mark of the quarter, but Regis senior Meg Hanson netted a goal off a feed from Murphy to give the Rangers a 3-2 edge with 7:22 remaining.

The Rangers would carry that 3-2 advantage into the second quarter before rattling off three straight goals to build a 6-2 cushion, receiving scores from the trio of Ferguson, graduate student attacker Lucy Johnson and senior attacker Gabby Rothermund.

Regis would take a 6-3 lead into halftime and put the game away with a dominant final 30 minutes, anchored by the play in net by sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch and a defensive back line that limited Colorado Mesa to just one goal on seven shots in the second half.

Goetsch stopped eight of the 12 shots she faced, posting a season-high save percentage of .750 while adding a team-high seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.

"Holy moly, what a goalie," Kellner raved when asked about Goetsch's performance. "Insane performance from her. She was seeing the ball so well and the defense in front of her was relentless."

Regis would grow its lead to 10-3 early in the fourth quarter on a score by senior midfielder Bailey Truex, who led all scorers with three goals Sunday, and put the exclamation point on the victory with scores from Murphy (3:28) and Truex (2:05) to put any comeback hopes to rest for CMU.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished with a 23-19 shots advantage
  • The Rangers won the turnover battle, 24-18
  • Colorado Mesa had the edge on draw controls, 11-9
  • Regis finished with 25 ground balls to CMU's 21, led by Goetsch with seven and sophomore defender Terah Skillings with a career-high five
  • Skillings and Regis graduate student Maya Quigley led Regis with four caused turnovers apiece

FOUR-PEAT:
"I'll have to let that sink in for awhile It's amazing what our senior class has been able to accomplish. It's a challenge every year to repeat that success, you graduate seniors every year, you never know what the team is going to look like, but I always come back to the word, 'selfless,'" Kellner said. "They put team first every single day and work extremely hard on the field, in the weight room, and this is always one of our goals. But our goal will always be to leave this place better than we found it and this senior class has definitely accomplished that."

UP NEXT: Regis, which owned the No. 1 seed in the latest NCAA Division II Regional rankings for the Midwest Region, will find out at 6:30 p.m. Sunday during the NCAA Division II Selection Show if the Rangers will host next week's Midwest regional tournament.

Official brackets and start times will be announced Monday. Fans are encouraged to check back on the Regis University Athletics website: www.regisrangers.com

"I think the sky is the limit, but we're going to take things one game at a time," said Kellner when asked about the team's ceiling heading into the NCAA Tournament. "We're excited to see who our next opponent is and where we'll play, but the focus will remain on us. We'll prepare for whoever we might see, but we're to continue focusing on us and support each other."
