No. 3 Rangers jump out early, stay undefeated with 17-11 home win over Colorado Mesa

DENVER, Colo. — In a rematch of last year's RMAC title game, the No. 3 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team continued its perfect start to the 2023 campaign with a 17-11 home win over Colorado Mesa University on Thursday under the lights at the Regis Turf Fields.

Regis (10-0 overall, 4-0 RMAC) is now a spotless 26-0 all-time against the Mavericks (3-4 overall, 3-1 RMAC), including a 16-0 mark in Denver.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After the Mavericks tallied the first goal of the game at the 14:07 mark, the first quarter belonged to the Rangers as they rattled off the next five goals — three coming courtesy of senior attacker Meg Hanson — to own a 5-1 lead heading into the second.

Regis would lead by as many as six goals in the first half, but Colorado Mesa was able to net two quick ones in the final minute of the second quarter to trim the Rangers' lead to 9-5 at the break.

The Rangers would maintain a five-goal lead entering the fourth quarter at 12-7 before putting the game away with three straight goals, including a pair of man-up goals by junior midfielder Bailey Truex, that gave Regis its largest lead of the game at 15-8 with 11:11 remaining.

Truex would lead all scorers with five goals on the evening, while Hanson and graduate student midfielder Lucy Johnson each followed with hat tricks of their own.

Senior attacker Gabby Rothermund tied Truex and Johnson (three goals, two assists) for the team high with five total points as she netted two goals and led all players with three assists on Thursday.

Sophomore midfielder Madeline Schallmoser would be the fifth Ranger to have a multi-goal game, scoring two on just three shot attempts, while junior midfielder Lily Ferguson and freshman Shea Murphy each tallied one goal apiece to round out the Regis scoring.

Ferguson would do the bulk of her damage on the defensive end, leading all players with a career-high eight ground balls while causing five turnovers and scooping up four draw controls.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch made a season-high 10 saves on Thursday, matching her career high set last May against Grand Valley State, en route to picking up her 10th win of the spring.

GAME NOTES:
  • Colorado Mesa finished with a 33-27 edge in shot attempts
  • Regis edge the Mavericks, 22-21, in shots on goal
  • The Rangers won the turnover battle, 19-17
  • Regis dominated ground balls, 27-16
  • Colorado Mesa finished with a 21-11 advantage in draw controls
  • Regis senior defenseman Tara Davis posted a season-high four caused turnovers
  • The Regis defense limited Kiley Davis, the RMAC leading goal scorer (33), to just one goal on nine shot attempts
UP NEXT: Regis will conclude its mini two-game home stand on Saturday when it hosts Westminster College. First draw is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Regis Turf Fields in Denver.
