No. 3 Rangers set season highs in goals, shots and assists in home win over Westminster

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 3 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team closed out its two-game home stand with a dominating performance on Saturday as 11 different scorers tallied at least one goal in the Rangers' 20-4 drubbing of Westminster College.

For Regis (11-0 overall, 5-0 RMAC), the team set multiple season highs in goals scored, assists (14) and total shot attempts (40) against a Westminster squad (3-4 overall, 2-3 RMAC) that challenged the Rangers to be on point in their passing game.

"I thought we played an excellent team game against their zone. Westminster ran a backer zone on defense, so we knew we were going to need to move the ball quickly and move off-ball really well," said Regis head women's lacrosse coach, Sarah Kellner. "We took advantage of space inside and I thought we were really patient looking for those second and third cutters."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis, which entered the day with a staggering 44-16 edge in first-quarter so far in 2023, would get off to another fast start Saturday as the Rangers scored the first four goals of the contest and led 8-2 through the opening 15 minutes.

Between the end of the first and start of the second quarter, the Rangers rattled off seven straight goals — taking a 13-2 lead with 5:17 remaining in the half on a score by sophomore Becky Goetsch — to force a running clock the rest of the way.

The Regis attack was led by senior attacker Meg Hanson with a game-high four goals. She added an assist to finish with a five-point afternoon, adding to an already career season for the Centennial native as she is now up to 16 goals and seven assists — five goals and three assists in 2022 — on the spring.

"Meg is a strong leader on the attacking end and what she does really well is she has great feel and vision. And she has a tremendous stick, she rarely misses her target," Kellner said. "She's smart, she's patient and she has a lot of fun. This team is all about sharing the ball, playing together and playing with that joyful spirit and I think Meg embodies that."

Helping shoulder the offensive load on Saturday was graduate student midfielder Lucy Johnson and senior midfielder Bailey Truex, each of whom netted hat tricks of their own. Johnson would also tie for the team lead in assists Saturday with sophomore Madeline Schallmoser with three assists apiece.

True freshman Shea Murphy and sophomore Emily Spaeth would also add multi-goal games for the Rangers to help lead a dynamic offensive showing.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch remained spotless on the year as she improved to 11-0 overall, stopping four of the seven shots she faced. Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte took over between the pipes in the second half, making one save.

Another key area for the Rangers on Saturday was the draw circle as Regis dominated the visiting Griffins, 20-8, less than 48 hours after losing the draw control battle, 21-11, to Colorado Mesa University on Thursday.

"We always want to emphasis the 50-50 balls and it's a goal of ours to win that statistical category every game. Colorado Mesa proved to be a challenge there, they have a lot of speed on the circle, and sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce your way," Kellner said. "But I love how we responded (Saturday) and we were able to use a lot of different people on the draw and in the circle."

GAME NOTES:
  • Junior midfielder Lily Ferguson led Regis with five draw controls, while Truex followed with four
  • Truex and Murphy each scooped up three ground balls apiece, helping the Rangers edge the Griffins, 17-14, in that category
  • Regis finished the game with a 40-14 shots advantage, including 25-9 in shots on goal
UP NEXT: Regis will have a week to rest and recover before heading back out on the road to begin the second trip through the RMAC schedule next Saturday against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.

"Every team is getting better every day and every week, so we expect to see different teams the second time we play them than the first games," Kellner said. "They're going to make adjustments so we need to be ready to make adjustments too."
