Rangers hold #9 CSU San Bernardino to a draw in their home opener

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team earned a point against the #9 California State San Bernardino Coyotes on Friday, finishing in a draw at 2-2.

Regis (1-1-1 overall) pushed the Coyotes (2-0-1 overall) with 15 total shots on the night against a  squad whose opponents average 10 shots per game.

"Like I told the guys, we're feeling alright, you're never going to complain taking a point away from a top-10 opponent but I still think there's probably a little more we could've done and could've easily put ourselves in position to take a win away," said Regis men's soccer head coach, Taylor Diem. "Overall, we'll take it but walking away from the field knowing we could've done a bit better in certain situations to manage the game and get the win. A draw is not a bad result either."

How It Happened: The Rangers jumped out early thanks to a shot to the lower right corner in the fourth minute from graduate student midfielder, Michael Jimenez.

"Mikey is obviously starting to find himself in higher positions on the field and with the personnel we have on the field this year, he's typically always been a deeper-line midfielder but it's very apparent that he has qualities in him to score goals," said Diem. "We know the players that we can push higher and we're starting to see results from him. Not only can he slip a pass but he can finish for himself as well."

Regis' defense held strong for the rest of the first half, holding CSU San Bernardino scoreless and forcing them to miss 11 different shots in the first half. However, the Coyotes leveled the score at 1-1 in the 66th minute.

Not six minutes later, New Zealand native Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit snuck one past the diving Coyotes' goalkeeper in the 72 minute after a dime of a pass from graduate student Vilhjalmur Kaldal.

"He's the guy that if you give him two or three chances you're confident he can put at least one away," said Diem. "He's a great counter attack. Villy did really, really well playing into Ray and it was a great finish. Overall, I'm really happy those guys got on the board."

The silent hero for the night were the Rangers' defenders. The Coyotes typically average 45% of their shots on goal, but the Rangers' back line held them to six shots on goal out of their 20 total shots, averaging only 30%.

In addition, Matteo Colombo, a sophomore defender, was credited with a shot as well as an assist in Jimenez's goal in the fourth minute.

Game Notes:

Up Next: The Rangers continue their homestead on Sunday against #19 Cal Poly Pomona. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.

"The message is that we can compete with anyone in the country so long as we play our brand of soccer," said Diem. "When we're up, we have to find ways to maintain our composure and keep control of the game."
