DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Men's Soccer team saw their winning streak come to an end on Thursday, but remain undefeated in conference play as they tied Colorado School of Mines 3-3. The Rangers now sit at 5-2-6 (4-0-1 RMAC), while the Orediggers move to 2-9-2 (1-2-2 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers took the first shots of the match, as Julian Fally and Stanley Nash took early attempts. Jacobo Betancourt-Tavor's shot went high at 12:24, but he followed it quickly with a goal, assisted by Liam Corr and Ignacio Bellina. Mines took their first shot at 18:49, but Corr followed that with a goal off a free kick in the upper left corner. Greg Squire had his first save of the match right 32:00, but the Rangers recorded six of the final seven shots of the match, including on-target shots by Ethan Byrnes, Fally, and Vasili Papadopolous.
"We were really happy to go up 2-0 in the first half," said head coach Taylor Diem. "The conversation at halftime was about finding that next gear and being able to put the game away."
Regis kept the momentum to start the second halfas Betancourt-Tavor scored his second goal of the day, assisted by Fally and Papadopoulos. However, the momentum flipped when Mines scored scored in the 56th minute, and quickly followed that with another score less than a minute later. The Orediggers evened the match at 3-3 at 64:10 on their third second half goal. Corr had a pair of shots blocked before having one saved in the 72nd minute. A late header from CSM went wide, as did a shot from Corr with two minutes left, and the match ended in a 3-3 draw.
"Going up 3-0 was great, and I thought we had chances to go up even more. But then we got pretty sloppy in the defensive third, and it felt like Mines was a lot more hungry to get after the ball. That is dangerous when they were already landing shots in the box."
"The silver lining is that we still remain undefeated at home and in RMAC play," continued Diem. "But it is still frustrating. We just need to use this as a learning opportunity as we prepoare for Metro on Sunday."
