DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Men's Soccer team posted a clean sheet on Sunday afternoon as they bested Metropolitan State University of Denver, 1-0. The Rangers improve to 6-2-6 (5-0-1 RMAC), while the Roadrunners fall to 5-6-3 (2-2-2).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Metro State would take the first shot of the match, an on-target attempt at 7:04 that was saved by Greg Squire. The Roadrunners took another three shots in short order, but none were on goal until Squire saved another in the 26th minute. Following Squire's third save in the match, Jan Grillistch took the Rangers first shot, but it went out high, and the teams went into the break with a 0-0 stalemate.
"Metro games always have a different feel to them, with them being our cross-town rival," said Head Coach Taylor Diem. "And they are playing well this season, adding even more to the game."
At 56:56, the Rangers drew a foul in the box, earning a penalty kick that Johan Murillo buried for the 1-0 lead. The next four shots of the match would be taken by MSUD, with one being on goal and saved. Jack Shimkus took the final try for Regis in the 78th minute, and the Rangers defense held for the 1-0 victory.
"It by no means was a pretty game," continued Diem, "but we have talked a lot about having to win in different ways, and I'm happy with how we were able to grind it out defensively."
"We didn't create as much as we would have liked to, but one chance is all you need to win."

· Murillo's goal was the lone shot on goal for the Rangers
