No. 5 Rangers bounce back, put the clamps on MWSU in 16-5 victory

DENVER, Colo. — Led by a dominant defensive performance, the No. 5 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team bounced back in a big way Sunday, shaking off a Saturday loss to No. 9 Maryville and earning a 16-5 rout of Missouri Western State University.

Regis (5-1 overall) would force the visiting Griffons (5-3 overall) into 27 turnovers and just 16-for-24 (67%) on clear attempts Sunday, with sophomore Maggie Schipfer and senior Lily Ferguson pacing the ferocious midfield with four caused turnovers apiece.

"It was a great bounce-back for us and I thought it was really important that we set the tone early, got back to playing Regis lacrosse the way we know how," said Regis head coach, Sarah Kellner. "We knew taking care of the ball was going to be a big factor in this game. It took us a little while, we had too many turnovers in the first half, but I thought we made great adjustments on both sides of the field as the game went on."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers succeeded in setting the tone early as they score six of their 16 goals in the opening quarter, going up 6-2 on the Griffons through the first 15 minutes.

Regis capitalized on Missouri Western penalties as three of the six first-quarter goals were man-up opportunities.

Defense would reign supreme in the second quarter as each team was limited to just one goal apiece, sending the game into the half with the Rangers holding a 7-3 advantage.

Regis would build its cushion in the third quarter, though, as the Rangers outscored the Griffons, 4-0, in the period. Senior midfielder Bailey Truex netted two of her three goals of the afternoon to start the third, while Schipfer, who scored a hat trick of her own Sunday, and graduate student attacker Gabby Rothermund capped the dominant quarter.

"I thought we did a better job in that third quarter of playing with our feet, emphasizing on the attack of moving ahead of the dodge and protecting the ball," Kellner said. "On the defensive end, I thought we also did a better job playing with our feet and not extending our arms."

The Rangers would put a bow on the victory, outscoring Missouri Western, 5-2, in the final quarter to seal the 16-5 final.

In net, senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte earned her third win of the spring after stopping 10 of the 15 shots on goal she faced while the defense in front of her helped limited MWSU to just 10 shot attempts, two goals and 12 turnovers over the final 30 minutes.

"I thought we had a very solid effort on defense. We were trying to protect the middle, force tough angled shots and Liz was seeing it all really well today," Kellner said.
Offensively, nine different Rangers would score at least one goal on Sunday, led by the hat tricks from Truex and Schipfer.

Sophomore midfielder Shea Murphy would tied for the team-high in points with two goals and two assists, while junior Becky Goetsch and sophomore Noemi Ramirez each netted two goals apiece, as well.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will get a few days to rest, recover and prepare for another big-time regional match on Friday against No. 13 ranked University of Indianapolis. First draw is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Regis Turf Fields.
