Bunker snags season-high 18 draw controls, No. 10 Rangers knock off No. 12 UIndy to conclude homestand

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 10 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team closed its five-game homestand in style on Friday, methodically wearing down No. 12 University of Indianapolis to earn a 19-13 victory.

Friday's win under the lights also put a bow on a strong non-conference portion of the schedule for Regis (6-1 overall), which now prepares for its RMAC opener on the road Sunday against UCCS, while the loss dropped regional foe UIndy to 5-3 overall on the season.

"This was a huge win for us in the region. UIndy is a really great team, well-coached and disciplined. But I thought we brought a lot of energy and were really up for this game," said Regis head coach, Sarah Kellner. "We wanted to make a statement and rebound a bit after an early region loss to Maryville and I think we did that."

HOW IT HAPPENED
In a first half that was evenly matched across the board, the Rangers were able to produce the difference maker in the draw circle as they won the draw battle, 13-3, in the first half en route to owning a slim 8-7 lead.

Regis would finish the evening with a commanding 24-9 advantage in draw controls, led by junior Megan Bunker with a season-high 18.

"Megan was exceptional tonight. She has a lot of help with the girls we have on the draw circle and we knew it was a puzzle that we had to solve," Kellner said. "And there's no one better than Megan Bunker. UIndy put a couple different people in there against her and Megan was able to put the team on her back in big moments to get us possession."

Regis was able to take advantage of those added possession opportunities, finishing with a 33-23 advantage in shot attempts; highlighted by a second quarter where the Rangers outshot the Greyhounds, 14-5.

Offensively, senior midfielder Bailey Truex recorded her seventh straight game with three goals or more, scoring on each of her first three shot attempts to give Regis a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.

Truex would be one of three Regis players to score four goals on Friday, joined by fellow senior Lily Ferguson and sophomore Shea Murphy.

The Rangers were able to build their first cushion of the game in the third quarter as they opened the half on a 4-0 scoring run, receiving two goals from Bunker, a score by Ferguson and a woman-up goal by graduate student attacker Gabby Rothermund that made it a 12-7 Regis lead midway through the period.

Still maintaining a three-goal lead early in the fourth quarter, Regis put the game away with another 4-0 burst that ballooned the lead to 19-12 with just 3:21 remaining, capped by a goal from first-year transfer Lauren Sheets.

In net, senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte made four saves en route to earning her fourth win of the season.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will now make the short trek down I-25 South on Sunday to open RMAC play against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. First draw is scheduled for 11 a.m.
