No. 10 Regis erupts in the third quarter, knocks off UCCS to earn first RMAC win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The No. 10 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team capped off an undefeated weekend, and notched its first RMAC win of 2024, on Sunday with a 19-9 road win over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

Regis (7-1 overall, 1-0 RMAC) used a dominating third quarter to take control of the game, outscoring the Mountain Lions (2-4 overall, 0-1 RMAC) by a 7-1 margin coming out of the half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UCCS came out of the gates strong, scoring the first two goals of the game and remaining tied with the high-powered Rangers at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Regis was able to build a little cushion to begin the second quarter as, trailing 4-3, the Rangers rattled off four straight goals between the 13:35 mark and 6:05 remaining in the half to take a 7-4 lead.

The Mountain Lions would counter, though, with two late goals of their own to trim the Regis lead to 7-6 entering the halftime break.

Regis would dash any UCCS hopes of an upset in the third quarter, however, as the Rangers scored the first seven goals of the second half between the 14:49 and 2:49 marks of the period to balloon their lead to 14-6. The Rangers, who have now outscored opponents 33-18 in third quarters this season, would dominate the shot attempts (13-4) and doubled-up UCCS in draw controls (6-3) in the period.

Junior midfielder Becky Goetsch scored all three of her goals Sunday during that third quarter run; her second hat trick of the spring.

Regis would close out the afternoon with a strong fourth quarter, scoring the first three goals and forcing a running clock for the first time at 17-7 with 7:55 remaining en route to the 19-9 final.

Eleven different Rangers would score a goal Sunday, led by sophomore midfielder Maggie Schipfer with four and Goetsch with her three.

Sophomore attacker Lauren Sheets, junior midfielder Madeline Schallmoser and junior Megan Bunker would all add two goals apiece, as well.

In addition to her two scores, Bunker continued her dominance in the draw circle as she scooped up a game-high 16 draw controls on Sunday after posting a season-high 18 draws in Friday's win over No. 12 University of Indianapolis. She is currently third among all Division II players with 8.875 draw controls per game.

GAME NOTES
  • Graduate student attacker Gabby Rothermund notched three points with a goal and team-high two assists.
  • Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte recorded nine saves, her second most of 2024, and earned her fifth win in the cage.
  • Senior midfielder Lily Ferguson and freshman Abby Mays paced all Rangers with four ground balls apiece.
  • Regis as a team was 16-for-17 in clear attempts while UCCS was 15-for-21.
