No. 9 Regis scores the first 14 goals, cruise to 19-1 home win over CSU Pueblo

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 9 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team dominated wire-to-wire on Wednesday afternoon, opening a new home stand with a 19-1 thumping of Colorado State University Pueblo at the Regis Turf Fields.

Regis (8-1 overall, 2-0 RMAC) had eight different goal scorers, and a career performance from sophomore midfielder Maggie Schipfer, during a Wednesday afternoon that saw the Rangers rattle off nine first-quarter goals, and the game's first 14 goals, against the ThunderWolves (2-5 overall, 0-3 RMAC).

"We really wanted to be consistent in how we played from start to finish, with an emphasis on how we came out in the first quarter," said Regis head coach, Sarah Kellner. Entering play Wednesday, the Rangers had only outscored opponents 33-31 in the opening period. "From our defense, draw control to the attacking end, we really wanted cleanly execute our game plan and I thought our team did a great job respecting possession, taking care of the ball, and helping each other score."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis executed its fast start to perfection, grabbing a 5-0 lead through the game's opening five minutes, and holding a commanding 9-0 advantage after the first quarter.

Schipfer was at the heart of the Rangers' run as she scored three-straight goals during that 5-0 burst and would finish the afternoon with career highs in goals scored (6), assists (3) and total points (9).

"This has been something that we've seen all the time in practice," Kellner said of Schipfer's playmaking ability. "Maggie does such a good job of always having her head up, knowing when it pass and when it is her opportunity to drive in the lane. It doesn't surprise me and I'm happy for her to have this kind of performance. We see this all the time from her because she plays with exceptionally high lacrosse IQ."

The Rangers would back up their dominant first quarter by blanking the visiting ThunderWolves, 4-0, in the second quarter to own a 13-0 lead at the break.

Defensively, Regis would hold CSU Pueblo off the scoreboard until the 4:36 mark of the third quarter when the Pack was able to finally break through on a free position opportunity.

That would be the lone blemish on the afternoon for a Rangers' defense that limited CSU Pueblo to just a 12-for-22 (55%) mark on clear attempts and forced 25 total turnovers.

In the net, senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte earned her sixth win of the season by stopping six of the seven shots she faced and true freshman midfielder Abby Mays paced all Regis players with three caused turnovers.

"Liz was very steady in the cage, patient and grounded, which were some things she had been focusing on. And she had a great defensive effort in front of her that forced CSU Pueblo to take a lot of shots from the outside," Kellner said. "The caused turnovers with our ride was something we had really been trying to work on, putting a little more pressure on opponents in their defensive end where we're allowed to play a little more physically than in the midfield, where you're more susceptible to green cards, and I thought we executed really well."

In addition to Schipfer's big day, the Rangers also had four other players produce multi-goal games as graduate student attacker Gabby Rothermund and sophomore Shea Murphy each posted hat tricks, while senior midfielders Bailey Truex and Lily Ferguson each added two goals apiece.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will conclude their Easter Weekend home stand on Saturday when they host Fort Lewis College. First draw is scheduled for noon at the Regis Turf Fields.
