No. 8 Rangers cap road trip with a 16-14 win over No. 5 Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. — Behind a dominant second-half effort, the No. 8 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team provided an exclamation point to its Florida road trip as they knocked off No. 5 ranked Florida Southern College by a 16-14 final on Monday afternoon.

After trailing 6-3 after the first quarter, Regis (2-0 overall) outscored the Mocs (4-2 overall), 13-8, over the final three quarters, including 6-3 in the second half, to earn their first statement win of 2024.

"It was a great team win. The girls played not just extremely hard, but also very smart," said Regis head coach, Sarah Kellner. "I'm hoping this win builds a lot of confidence for us. We have a lot of talent and, after a long pre-season, we were wondering how we were going to fair down here against teams that had already played 3-4 games. But the girls responded really well and I was proud of the mindset they had this trip of focusing on the next play."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers had to face a little adversity early on as Florida Southern closed the first quarter on a mini 3-0 scoring run to take a 6-3 lead.

Florida Southern would lead by as many as four goals at 11-7 with 1:30 remaining in the first half before the Rangers countered with a 3-0 blitz of their own.

Graduate student midfielder Bailey Truex opened the run with her first of three goals on the afternoon at the 1:10 mark. Then the sophomore duo of Shea Murphy (0:35) and Maggie Schipfer (0:21) each netted scores in the waning seconds of the half to trim the deficit to 11-10 at the break.

"It wasn't a great first quarter as far as the scoreboard, but I thought we were just settling in," Kellner said. "I thought our defensive ball pressure was great and we remained poised on offense. Our shots weren't going in early, I thought we were rushing them a little bit, but once we settled in we were able to take that extra half-second to look ahead, see the net, think and shoot and that made a big difference in the second quarter and beyond."

The Mocs would score the first goal of the third quarter to briefly hold a 12-10 lead, but the Rangers would go on to dominate the period, rattling off the game's next five goals to take a 15-12 lead at the 3:39 mark of the third following a score from senior midfielder Lily Ferguson off a feed from graduate student attacker Gabby Rothermund.

Florida Southern would never inch closer than two goals the rest of the way as the Rangers defense, and goalkeeper tandem of Brigit Goetsch and Elizabeth Myotte tightened the screws to secure the 16-14 final.

Goetsch received the start and made eight saves en route to earning her second win of 2024, while Myotte stopped two of the three shots she faced in her 10 minutes of action in net.

"One thing we were really trying to do was stop Florida Southern from gaining any sort of momentum. That team is very powerful with phenomenal athletes and great finishers, so we were trying to put pressure out on the ball and we did a very good job in the second half limiting our fouls," Kellner said. "We had some real solid goalie play in the second half from Brigit and Liz, both making some key saves for us, and then our defense getting the ball back for us so we could go play offense."

For the second straight game, Murphy led all Regis goal scorers with a game-high five scores while adding one assist. Schipfer and Truex each added hat tricks, while sophomore attacker Lauren Sheets and junior midfielder Megan Bunker tallied two goals apiece to pace the Rangers' offense.

"I think our whole offense did a great job sharing the ball and taking opportunities. And then Shea did a really great job seeing the lanes to the cage. She is very shifty and was able to get defenders on their heels a little bit," Kellner said. "Part of her game is that she has a very strong left and right hand so it's very difficult for a defense to shut her down because she can just switch hands and go."

Defensively, junior midfielder Madeline Schallmoser paced all Rangers with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. And for the second straight game, Regis dominated the draw circle as they topped the Mocs, 21-13, and won the draw battle, 8-3, in the second half.

Ferguson led all players with seven draw controls, followed closely by Truex with six, while the duo of Bunker and Murphy each collected four draws apiece.

"I thought our draw team did a phenomenal job. They were very dialed in," Kellner said. "One of the biggest threats Florida Southern has it their draw team because of how fast they are. I thought we were able to outwork and out-smart them on a couple draws to gain possession and keep momentum on our side."

UP NEXT
The Rangers will now turn their attention toward their 2024 home opener, scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday against Dominican University at the Regis Turf Fields. It'll be the first of a five-game home stand for Regis before the team opens RMAC play March 24th.
