Myotte ties season-high in saves, No. 7 Rangers open weekend with 16-4 win over Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. — The No. 7 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team opened the final road trip of the 2024 season with a Friday matinee against Fort Lewis College, pulling away from the Skyhawks in the middle quarters en route to a 16-4 victory that guaranteed the Rangers sole possession of the RMAC regular season title.

Regis (15-1 overall, 9-0 RMAC) has now won five straight RMAC regular season titles dating back to 2019 — the 2020 campaign was suspended due to Covid-19 — and improve to a perfect 32-0 all-time against the Skyhawks (3-10 overall, 2-7 RMAC) since the two teams first squared off in 2009.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first meeting between the teams in Denver back on March 30, the Rangers scored nine first quarter goals en route to a 17-0 shutout. On Friday, Fort Lewis College was able to keep the game close in the opening period as the Rangers, hampered by eight early turnovers, held a slim 3-1 advantage heading into the second.

Regis would bounce-back in the second quarter, though, as the team trimmed the turnover number down to five and outshot the Skyhawks, 12-6, in the quarter. The Rangers would rack up five goals on those 12 shots while, defensively, shutting out FLC to own an 8-1 lead entering the halftime break.

Sophomore midfielder Shea Murphy scored both of her two goals Friday in the first period, while fellow sophomore Maggie Schipfer, the reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, continued to add to her stellar 2024 as she scored a hat trick in the second quarter as part of her team-high four goals on the afternoon.

Regis would carry that momentum into the second half, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter to force a running clock at 11-1 with 10:20 remaining, and building its lead to as many as 12 at 15-3 following back-to-back goals by junior Becky Goetsch at the 11:54 and 6:49 marks, respectively.

As a team, the Rangers had nine different goal scorers on the afternoon, led by the four first-half goals from Schipfer. Murphy, Goetsch, sophomore attacker Lauren Sheets and senior midfielder Lily Ferguson all added two goals apiece.

Graduate student attacker Gabby Rothermund, fresh off setting the school record for career assists (130) last Sunday against Colorado Mesa, added two more helpers on Friday.

Defensively, Ferguson and junior midfielder Megan Bunker paced the Rangers with three caused turnovers apiece while the duo also combined for 11 of the Rangers' 14 draw control wins.

Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte helped put a bow on the convincing victory as she tied her season-high in saves with 10, stopping 10 of the 14 shots on goal she faced. Myotte currently leads all RMAC goalkeepers with a 6.64 goals against average; the third best mark in all of Division II.

UP NEXT
Regis will conclude the 2024 regular season at 12 p.m. on Sunday when the team squares off against Colorado State University Pueblo (2-10 overall, 0-8 RMAC).

The Rangers will then prepare to host the RMAC Tournament scheduled for Friday, May 3rd and Sunday, May 5th. Official start times and the bracket will be released by the RMAC on Monday.
