No. 8 Rangers knock off rival Colorado Mesa, Kellner earns win No. 200 of her career

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The No. 8 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team opened its weekend road trip in fine fashion, avenging a road loss to Colorado Mesa University suffered last season with a workmanlike 16-7 victory over their in-state rivals.

Friday's victory for Regis (10-1 overall, 4-0 RMAC) also marked a significant milestone for head coach Sarah Kellner, who picked up her 200th career victory and is now a staggering 200-73 (.721) overall during her 18-year tenure with the Rangers.

"My first thought was I just feel old and have been doing this for awhile," Kellner joked when asked about win No. 200. "But it's really a testament to the players who helped me get there. None of it happens without the great student-athletes we've had here who put the work in on and off the field. Facing Colorado Mesa, we know they are a huge conference rival and we were going to have to be at our best."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers were able to get off to a tremendous start on Friday, battling the high winds and dusty conditions to take a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and build a 6-1 advantage by the 6:28 mark of the second quarter following a score from junior midfielder Megan Bunker.

Colorado Mesa (4-4 overall, 3-1 RMAC) would make a run of its own, though, scoring four of the last five goals in the half, including two scores in the final 40 seconds, to trim the Regis lead down to 7-5 at the break.

The Mavericks remained within two goals at 8-6 with 10:07 remaining in the third quarter before the Rangers would put the game away with an 8-0 scoring run between the third and fourth quarters, sparked by the Rangers' dominance in the draw circle.

Regis won 23 of the 26 draws in Friday's game, led by Bunker with 11, and only allowed one draw win to Colorado Mesa in the second half.

"We had a lot of people step up and help us dominate the draw circle (Friday). To win 23 of the 26 draws was a real big team accomplishment," Kellner said.

Offensively, sophomore midfielder Maggie Schipfer continued her breakout season as she led all players with five goals and seven total points — including a hat trick in the third quarter alone — to give her the team lead in both categories with 31 goals and 42 points, respectively.

"I think Maggie is at her best when she plays loose so we try to get her in that mindset of having fun. Today, she played with a smile on her face the whole game," Kellner said. "She was awesome for us."

Graduate student midfielder Bailey Truex would follow with three goals of her own, her seventh hat trick of 2024, while sophomore midfielder Shea Murphy and senior midfielder Lily Ferguson each added two goals apiece.

On the defensive end of the field, graduate student defender Sarah Hanson tallied a career-high five caused turnovers while junior defender Kaitlynn Lazaro, Bunker and senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte all tied for the team lead with three ground balls.

Myotte added to her strong afternoon with seven saves and her eighth win of the spring.

The Rangers will look to close out their road trip strong on Sunday when they travel out to Salt Lake City, Utah for a 2 p.m. matinee against Westminster University.
