No. 8 Rangers cap weekend road trip with a 17-12 win over Westminster

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Behind a five-goal effort from graduate student midfielder Bailey Truex, the No. 8 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team closed out its weekend road trip with a 17-12 win over Westminster University.

With the win, the Rangers (11-1 overall, 5-0 RMAC) remained undefeated inside RMAC play and extended their current season-long winning streak to seven games while the loss dropped the Griffins to 3-5 overall and 3-2 inside the conference for the spring.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis was able to get off to a strong start on Sunday, taking a 5-2 lead after the first quarter while dominating the Griffins in shot attempts, 11-4. Sophomore midfielder Shea Murphy tallied two of her three goals on the afternoon in the first period.

After Westminster briefly cut the deficit to 5-4 with 13:49 remaining in the second quarter, the Rangers would answer back with a 7-1 scoring run, including five straight goals between the 12:52 and 7:28 marks to push their lead up to 12-6 at the halftime break.

Regis would then put the game away in a low-scoring third quarter, shutting out Westminster, 3-0, in the period to take its largest lead of the game at 15-6 entering the fourth.

The Griffins would show some late life, scoring the first six goals of the fourth quarter to close to within three at 15-12, but would not inch any closer as the Rangers scored the final two goals of the game to hold on for the 17-12 victory.

Truex would lead all scorers with her season-high five goals, two of which came in the Rangers' dominate third quarter effort, to put her in a tie for the team lead in goals scored (34) this spring with sophomore Maggie Schipfer.

Schipfer added three goals of her own on Sunday to join Murphy with a hat trick, while graduate student attacker Gabby Rothermund (1 goal, 3 assists) and senior midfielder Lily Ferguson (1 goal, 3 assists) each racked up four points to help pace the Regis offense.

GAME NOTES

Schipfer added to her well-rounded afternoon with a team-high four ground balls.
Regis as a team was 21-for-22 in clear attempts while Westminster finished 19-for-22.
Westminster won the draw control battle, 14-12.
Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Myotte earned her ninth win of the season and stopped eight of the 20 shots on goal she faced.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will head back home and get ready for a single RMAC contest next week when it hosts the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at 7 p.m. Friday evening.
