ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Regis University Lacrosse team, ranked #6 in the most recent IWLCA Division II Coaches Poll, dropped the second game of their opening weekend, 19-6, to #8 Maryville University (Mo.). The Ranger fall to 0-2, while the Saints improve to 1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers would take the first shot on goal of the game, but the Saints would score the first goal, three minutes in. MU would add a second goal less than a minute later, but Maggie Schipfer got the Rangers on the board with a goal assisted by Shea Murphy. Murphy then had two quick, back-to-back goals to put the Rangers ahead, 3-2. Lexie Springman made it a 4-0 run with an unassisted goal, but with 12 second left in the quarter, Maryville scored their third goal of the match.
The Saints evened the score less than a minute into the second, and took the lead four minutes later. MU added two more goals, one of them being man-up, before Becky Goetsch scored on a free position shot to end the run. After a six minute scoring drought, the Saints added one more goal for the 8-5 lead going into halftime.
Schipfer closed the gap with a pair of quick goals to start the third quarter, one assisted by Megan Bunker, and the other by Justine Spahr. However, Maryville took back the momentum, scoring the final four goals of the period, despite two saves from Brigit Goetsch.
Murphy won the draw control to start the final period, and quickly scored off that win, assisted by Becky Goetsch. Brigit Goetsch saved another attempt before the Saints scored two more, going up 14-8, and after three on-target attempts from Regis were saves, Spahr scored an unassisted, man-up goal. However, MU scored the last two goals of the game, winning 16-9
