DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked #11 in the most recent IWLCA Top-25 Coaches Poll, opened RMAC play on Friday evening, but lost to Colorado Mesa University, 16-11. The Rangers fall to 2-4 (0-1 RMAC), while the Mavericks improve to 2-4 (1-0 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis would take the first lead of the game, with a Shea Murphy unassisted goal at the 8:47 mark. Kaitlynn Lazaro, Madeline Schallmoser, and Megan Bunker would all cause turnovers, but with :30 seconds left in the period, Mesa evened the score, 1-1.
The Mavericks then took the lead to start the second quarter, but after Ayla Cole controlled the draw, Lexie Springman scored on a free position shot, tying the game again. However, from there, CMU took over, scoring the next five goals of the game, taking a 7-2 lead. Schallmoser scored on a free position shot to stop the bleeding, but Mesa answered one more time before half, leaving the score at 8-3 going into the break.
Becky Goetsch scored out of the half, but after an Abby Mays caused turnover, CMU scored twice in one minute. Goetsch scored again, then Murphy added a woman-up goal to bring the score to 6-10. Despite two saves from Brigit Goetsch, the Mavericks ended the third with two goals, building a 12-6 lead.
They carried that momentum into the fourth, finding the net in under a minute. Kyla Bieker answered for the Rangers, and while the Rangers landed four shots on goal, Mesa would be the next to score, adding two more goals. Be. Goetsch set up Justine Spahr for two goals, and Alyse Valdez for one as Regis went on a quick 3-0 run, but Mesa added one more late insurance goal for the 16-11 win.
