PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked #17 in the most recent IWLCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, picked up a dominant win over Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday evening, 18-3. The Rangers improve to 4-4 (2-1 RMAC), while the Thunderwolves fall to 1-5 (1-1 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUP would strike first, winning the opening draw and turning that into a goal from Moira Turpen. However, the Rangers would take over from there, as Madeline Schallmoser scored on a free position shot. Shea Murphy and Aubrey Benton then alternated scoring goals, quickly putting Regis up, 5-1. Both of Benton's goals were assisted by Megan Bunker. Justine Spahr scored less than a minute later, and Alyse Valdez found the net with 8:03 to go in the opening period. Abby Mays caused a turnover, and picked up a ground ball before Lexie Springman scored the eighth goal of the quarter on a free position shot.
To start the second quarter, Brigit Goetsch saved a try, and picked up the ground ball. Becky Goetsch then found Spahr for another score. Pueblo scored to end the 9-0 run, but Schallmoser caused a pair of turnovers, leading to Be. Goetsch's goal at 7:12. The Rangers ended the half with a pair of assisted goals, Case Carlson finding Be. Goetsch, and Kyla Beiker setting up Valdez for the 12-2 advantage.
The momentum carried into the second half, with Schallmoser causing a turnover to end a clear attempt, and Lauren Sheets assisting another Murphy goal. Late in the quarter, Schallmoser caused another failed clear and turnover, and Bunker scored, ballooning the lead to 14-2.
Bieker assisted two goals early in the final period, one to Carlson, and one to Gabrielle Beals. Lauren Paulson took over in the goal for RU, saving three shots before the Thunderwolves snuck one past with five minutes left in the game. Sheets scored late on a free position shot, and Benton added one final score with :22 second left, bringing the final score to 18-3.
