SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked #15 in the most recent IWLCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, defeated Westminster University (Utah), 13-9, on Friday night. The Rangers improve to 9-4 (7-1 RMAC), while the Griffins fall to 5-7 (2-5 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Madeline Schallmoser gave the Rangers an early lead with a goal on a free position shot. Shea Murphy followed that with a Megan Bunker-assisted goal less than a minute later. The Griffins took four of the next five shots, one being saved by Brigit Goetsch, but the Rangers would record the next goal, an unassisted score from Schallmoser. Becky Goetsch found Justine Spahr to push the lead to 4-0, but Westminster scored twice in the final two minutes to cut into the lead.
Aubrey Benton scored almost immediately to start the second, assisted by Kyla Bieker. Terah Skillings was able to cause a turnover, while Schallmoser and Bunker picked up ground balls, leading to a goal from Bieker. Spahr would score, unassisted, out of a timeout, before WU scored on a free position shot, bringing the score to 7-3. Regis ended the half with a final, free-position goal by Lexie Springman.
Br. Goetsch had an early save in the third, quickly followed by a Be. Goetsch goal. However, after another free position goal from Springman, the Griffins would score three quick goal to cut the Ranger advantage to 10-6. Spahr and Benton connected twice to end the quarter, each having a goal and an assist to each other.
After Westminster found the net to start the final period, Schallmoser would control a draw and cause a turnover. However, a Rangers shot would hit the post, leading to a good clear and goal from WU. Alyse Valdez took two quick shots on goal, scoring on the second, to add some breathing room for RU. The Griffins scored one final time, but it came too late as Regis held on for the 13-9 win.
GAME NOTES
· Spahr led all players with four points on an assist and hat trick of goals
· Benton added three points, while three Rangers had four points and three had one
· Schallmoser collected seven ground balls and caused four turnovers
· Bunker picked up six balls and controlled six draws
· Four Griffins had multiple points
· Br. Goetsch saved seven shots in the win. Gabriella Cheminant saved 11 in the loss.
