GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked #15 in the most recent IWLCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, got their revenge against RMAC-leading Colorado Mesa University on Sunday afternoon, winning 14-11. The Rangers climb to 10-4 (8-1 RMAC), while the Mavericks drop to 8-5 (7-1 RMAC).
The teams are now tied at the top of the RMAC standings, but the Mavericks have the inside track to host the RMAC tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks would sprint out to a 3-0 lead, scoring a trio of goals in under four minutes, before Regis even attempted a shot. Shea Murphy got the Rangers on the board with a free position shot, but CMU quickly responded with another score. Murphy eanred another free position attempt, and converted again, while Lexie Springman assisted Lauren Sheets to cut the deficit to 3-4. Brigit Goetsch picked up a pair of ground balls to end the opening quarter.
Murphy evened the score at 4-4 :10 seconds into the second on another free position goal. The Rangers then took the lead on another Springman-Sheets connection. The teams then traded goals over the rest of the quarter. Mesa evened the score at 5-5, and after Megan Bunker controlled the draw, Murphy scored, unassisted. Br. Goetsch saved a shot on goal, but allowed a goal soon after. This time, Murphy controlled the draw, and Justine Spahr would score to give the advantage back to Regis. After two more Br. Goetsch saves, CMU evened the match at 7-7, where it would stay going into halftime.
The Mavericks took back the lead early into the third period, but after Bunker caused a turnover, Murphy brought the score even again at 8-8. Regis would go ahead again as Madeline Schallmoser scored, and RU got some breathing room on another Murphy goal following a Bunker caused turnover. Kyla Bieker and Murphy both caused turnovers, and Schallmoser found Spahr, who found the back of the net for the 11-8 lead.
Bunker scored the first goal of the fourth period, assisted by Murphy. Br. Goetsch saved two more shots on target before Aubrey Benton added to the run, assisted by Bieker. Springman assisted Spahr as the lead ballooned to 14-8, and while Mesa had three late goals in just under two minutes, it came to late as the Rangers won, 14-11.
