DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked #16 in the most recent Division II IWLCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, defeated Colorado State University Pueblo in a huge way, 20-7, on Senior Day Sunday afternoon. The Rangers improve to 9-4 (6-1 RMAC), while the Thunderwolves fall to 1-11 (1-7 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Brigit Goetsch saved the first shot of the game by the Thunderwolves, Shea Murphy would score on an assist by Becky Goetsch. Less than a minute later, Be. Goetsch added an unassisted goal of her own. CSUP got on the board with 8:44 left in the period, then evened the score with a woman-up goal at 5:10. Justine Spahr quickly put Regis back ahead with a woman-up goal that was assisted by Kyla Bieker. Be Goetsch and Lauren Sheets both scored late goal to bring the score to 5-2 after the first.
Pueblo found the net first in the second period, but after Abby Mays caused a turnover, Be. Goetsch found Case Carlson for another Regis goal. Spahr and Terah Skillings both caused turnovers before Murphy scored on a free position shot. Lexie Springman also scored on a free position shot, then set up Carlson's second goal, bringing the score to 9-3 going into the break.
Megan Bunker kept the momentum going into the second half, scoring less than two minutes in. The Thunderwolves stopped the bleeding with a free position shot, but Aubrey Benton answered almost immediately with a score assisted by Bunker. Emily Spaeth scored on an assist from Be. Goetsch , then Be. Goetsch score two quick goal, one assisted by Springman. However, CSUP ended the third qith a 3-0 run, bringing the score to 14-7.
Be. Goestch put her influence on the first four Ranger goals of the fourth, scoring one, and assisting Springman, Spahr, and Madeline Schallmoser. The defense did not let up late, as Skillings, Kaitlynn Lazaro, Gabrielle Beals, and Spahr all forced turnover. RU ended the game with a goal scored by Sheets, assisted by Spahr, and assisted by Sheets, scored by Springman, winning 20-7.
GAME NOTES
· Be. Goetsch had a historic Senior Day, setting the Ranger record for assists in a game with six, and tying the points record with 11
· Springman added five more points
· 11 Rangers had at least one point
· Spahr had an all-around game with six draw controls, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers
· RU took a program record 51 shots landing 43 on goal
· Sydney Gunnels had three points for Pueblo
· Breonna Mason saved 23 shots despite the loss. Br. Goetsch earned the win with six saves
