DENVER, Colo - The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked 15th in the latest IWLAC poll, hosted Rockhurst University in a 11-7 win. The Rangers improved to 3-2 while the Hawks are 6-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Brigit Goetsch started strong in goal for the Rangers, recording two back-to-back saves to keep the game scoreless early. The Hawks eventually broke through with the first goal of the game, but the Rangers quickly responded. Lexie Springman fired a shot that found the back of the net, tying the game at 1–1 and giving RU its first goal of the afternoon. After securing the draw control, Springman helped create another scoring opportunity as Aubrey Benton and Evie Tanella each got shots off, but the Rangers were unable to capitalize. Regis remained tied with the Hawks at 1–1 heading into the second quarter.
Evie Tanella and Lauren Sheets each opened the quarter with a shot attempt for the Rangers. Rome Villani then put Regis in front, scoring to give RU the lead. After another draw control from Krista Munsinger, Aubrey Benton extended the Rangers' advantage, making it 3–1. Rangers continued the momentum; Sophia Katnik secured a ground ball that helped set up a goal from Maggie Schipfer. However, Rockhurst responded late in the half, scoring two goals in the final two minutes to cut into the deficit. Regis would take a narrow 4–3 lead into halftime.
Rockhurst opened the third quarter with a goal, but Regis quickly responded. After a draw control from Elle Enselman, Aubrey Benton found the back of the net off an assist from Lexie Springman. Two minutes later, following a Hawks turnover, Maggie Schipfer added another goal to extend the Rangers' lead to 6–4. Midway through the quarter, Springman scored her second goal of the game. Rockhurst would answer with a late goal, making it 7–5 at the end of the third quarter.
Kyla Bieker wasted no time in the fourth, scoring within the first thirty seconds. Just a minute later, Schipfer added another goal to continue the Rangers' momentum. Bieker then picked up a ground ball that led to a goal from Springman, extending the lead to 10–5. With five minutes remaining, Rome Villani secured a ground ball that set up a goal from Benton, assisted by Springman. Rockhurst would add two late goals, but the Rangers held on to secure an 11–7 victory.
