SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team opened RMAC play on the road at Westminster University (Utah) on Sunday afternoon, losing 12-11. The Rangers fall to 3-4 (0-1 RMAC), and the Griffins improve to 2-2 (2-0 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
WU jumped out to a strong lead, scoring the first four goals of the game in under five minutes. Lexie Springman got the Rangers on the board at 7:51 in the first on a free position shot. Following a Sophia Katnik caused turnover and Brigit Goetsch save, Krista Munsinger scored on her own free position attempt. Charlotte Hastings forced a late turnover, but Westminster scored once more in the opening period, extending their lead to 5-2.
Goestch saved the Griffins first shot of the second, and from there, Maggie Schipfer took over the game, scoring three goals in two minutes, two assisted by Lauren Sheets, and the other by Rome Villani. Sheets scored at 8:19 to give RU their first lead of the game, and Schipfer added another goal on a free position shot less than a minute later. Westminster interrupted the Rangers' run with an unassisted goal at 4:59, and while Villani scored on a free-position shot, WU scored twice in the final minute to tie the game going into halftime.
Regis took back the lead, scoring six minutes into the third on another Schipfer goal, but the Griffins answered with three unanswered goals. RU landed one shot on goal, and Goetsch saved two as neither team scored for the final five minutes of the period.
Munsinger forced a turnover early in the final quarter and assisted Schipfer goal on the other side, bringing the match back within one, 10-11. Elle Enselman controlled the ensuing draw, but while Goetsch and Evie Tanella were able to cause WU turnovers, the Griffins were the next to score, converting a free position shot just under the seven-minute mark. Schipfer scored again at 4:00, but the Rangers' final two shots were both saved, ending the game at 11-12.
GAME NOTES
· Schipfer scored a career-high seven goals with all eight shots on goal
· Villani and Sheets both had a goal and two assists
· Tanella recorded four ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers
· Regis won the ground ball battle, 28-27 and controlled the draw, 15-10
· Goetsch saved 10 shots. Three Griffins took the goal, and Kaitlyn Parish led with four saves
