LAKELAND, Fla. - The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked No. 15 in the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll, traveled to No. 2 Florida Southern College. They would fall 17- 5, the Rangers now sit at 1-2 while the Moccasins are 5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Florida Southern came out firing, finding the back of the net just 30 seconds into the contest. Following an FSC turnover,
Stella Geffre scooped up a key ground ball that led to a Regis goal from
Lexie Springman, tying the game at 1-1. Evei Tanella secured the draw control for the Rangers, but the Moccasins quickly regained momentum and began to pull away. Tanella created another scoring opportunity off a turnover but was unable to convert. Florida Southern capitalized on its chances, adding three more goals to extend its lead.
Ayla Cole made her presence known defensively with a caused turnover, while
Brigit Goetsch came up with a crucial save in net. Despite the defensive efforts, the Rangers found themselves trailing 7-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Regis opened the second quarter with another save from Goetsch, and Cole continued her strong defensive play with another caused turnover. The effort paid off as Tanella found the back of the net, cutting the deficit to 8-2.
Lauren Sheets added to the defensive pressure with a caused turnover of her own, but Florida Southern responded with two more goals to maintain control.
Krista Munsinger forced a turnover that allowed
Abby Mays to collect a ground ball, and Goetsch recorded another save, but the Rangers were unable to capitalize offensively, heading into halftime trailing 13-2.
Goetsch opened the second half with a pair of saves, sparking a Regis opportunity that led to a ground ball pickup by Sophia Katnick.
Maggie Schipfer capitalized soon after, finding the back of the net off an assist from
Lauren Sheets. Just a minute later, Sheets added a goal of her own, this time assisted by
Stella Geffre, as the Rangers began to find some offensive rhythm. Goetsch closed out the quarter with another save, but Regis trailed 14-4 heading into the final frame.
Schipfer opened the fourth quarter with a shot that narrowly missed, and Florida Southern responded with a strong push, scoring three consecutive goals. Schipfer continued to stay aggressive with another attempt, and
Karis Wilson added the final goal for the Rangers. Despite the late effort, Regis ultimately fell 17-5.
