DENVER, Colo - The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked 15th in the latest IWLAC poll, hosted Northern Michigan in a dominate14-6 win. The Rangers improve to 2-2 while the Wildcats are 5-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats wasted no time getting on the board, scoring their first goal within the opening minute. After a Northern Michigan turnover,
Rome Villani answered four minutes later to get Regis on the board. Northern Michigan responded with two quick goals to take a 3–1 lead with just over ten minutes remaining in the quarter. Bridgit Goetsch came up with a key save for the Rangers before
Kyla Bieker found the back of the net to cut into the deficit. Following a draw control from Sophia Katnick,
Evie Tanella tied the game at 3–3 for RU.
Lexie Springman then sparked the Rangers' offense, extending the lead with two back-to-back goals, 5-3 after the first quarter.
Maggie Schipfer opened the second quarter with a shot that narrowly missed the net. The Wildcats struck first in the frame, scoring with ten minutes remaining to make it 5–4. Goetsch added another save for Regis as Tanella and Springman each generated scoring chances.
Ayla Cole forced a turnover that led to a shot from
Krista Munsinger, but the attempt sailed wide.
Aubrey Benton became the first Ranger to score in the quarter, extending the Regis lead to two with just two minutes remaining. In the final seconds of the half, Benton connected with Schipfer, who beat the buzzer with one second left to send the Rangers into the break ahead 7–4.
Goetsch opened the half with a save for RU, setting the tone defensively. Tanella then pushed downfield and scored her second goal of the game, extending the Rangers' lead to 8–4. Benton continued the momentum for Regis, finding the back of the net twice on assists from Tanella and Bieker.
Rome Villani kept the Rangers' offense rolling, adding another goal to make it an 11–4 game. Goetsch followed with back-to-back saves before Northern Michigan managed to add a goal. At the end of the third quarter, Regis held an 11–5 lead.
Lauren Sheets opened the fourth-quarter scoring for the Rangers, finding the back of the net early.
Maggie Schipfer added a shot on goal while Goetsch recorded her 12th save of the game. Benton capped off the offensive performance with two more impressive goals, including one assisted by Schipfer, giving Regis a commanding 14–5 lead. The Wildcats would add a goal with a minute of play left, but the Rangers would run away with a 14-6 win.
GAME NOTES
Goetsch recorded 15 saves.
Benton scored five goals for RU.
Tanella recorded eight shots on goal with three goals.
Northern Michigan controlled the draw 18-3.
Goetsch did not allow a free position goal for the Wildcats.
