DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team hosted Colorado State University-Pueblo for their RMAC Home Opener, winning 18-14. The Rangers improve 5-4 (1-1 RMAC) to while the Thunderwolves sit at 4-4 (1-1 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Thunderwolves struck first with two early goals, including a man-up opportunity.
Sophia Katnik sparked Regis with a ground ball that led to a goal from
Maggie Schipfer, assisted by
Aubrey Benton. Schipfer continued to make her presence felt, forcing a turnover and converting it into another goal to tie the game at 2-2. CSU Pueblo briefly regained the lead, but Regis responded quickly as
Lauren Sheets found the back of the net off an assist from
Evie Tanella. Schipfer stayed hot, completing a hat trick in the first quarter to give the Rangers the lead. Following a draw control, she forced yet another turnover and capitalized with her fourth goal of the period, sending Regis into the second quarter ahead 5-3.
The Thunderwolves opened the second quarter with a goal, but Tanella secured the draw control to set up another Schipfer score, assisted by Sheets, extending the lead to 6-4. CSU Pueblo answered, but Brigit Geotsch halted the momentum with back-to-back saves. After a ground ball from
Krista Munsinger,
Lexie Springman finished the possession to push the lead to 7-5. The Thunderwolves rallied with two straight goals to even the score at 7-7, but
Rome Villani responded with a go-ahead goal off an assist from Schipfer. In the final minute, Geotsch came up with another key save and quickly transitioned the ball downfield, leading to a Springman goal. CSU Pueblo added a late score, but Regis carried a 9-8 advantage into halftime.
For the Rangers,
Lauren Sheets came up with a key ground ball that led to a goal from
Eva Searle. The Thunderwolves answered, but after a draw control from
Lexie Springman, she drove in and scored to extend the lead to 11-9. Following a wide shot by CSU Pueblo,
Maggie Schipfer netted her sixth goal of the game off an assist from
Evie Tanella. CSU Pueblo stayed within striking distance, but
Krista Munsinger secured a draw control that set up a goal from Sheets, assisted by Springman. The Thunderwolves cut the deficit to 13-11, but after a draw control from
Elle Enselman, Sheets connected with
Rome Villani for her second goal of the game. CSU Pueblo added a late score, sending Regis into the fourth quarter with a 14-12 lead.
To open the fourth, Schipfer and Tanella each fired early shots, but neither found the net. The Thunderwolves capitalized with back-to-back goals to tie the game at 14-14.
Ayla Cole shifted the momentum with consecutive caused turnovers, leading to a go-ahead goal from Springman. Springman stayed dominant, scoring again to make it 16-14. After a caused turnover from
Sophia Katnik, Springman completed a hat trick in the quarter, and Munsinger added another forced turnover that led to Springman's seventh goal of the night. The Rangers closed out the game on a strong run, securing their first RMAC victory with an 18-14 win.
GAME NOTES
Springman led RU with eight points, seven goals, and one assist.
Schipfer followed with seven points, six goals, and one assist.
Sheets and Villani each had two goals.
Schipfer and Munsinger each picked up four groundballs.
Abby Mays caused three turnovers for Regis.
