Rangers Overcome Slow Start, Take Down Mountain Lions on the Road

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked #17 in the most recent IWLCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, defeated the University of Colorado Colorado Springs on the road, 13-8 on Thursday evening. The Rangers improve to 7-4 (3-1 RMAC), while the Mountain Lions drop to 5-5 (3-2 RMAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED

UCCS quickly took the first lead of the game, scoring 34 seconds into the game. From there, the teams would trade 4-0 runs. Regis scored on a pair of goals by Maggie Schipfer, followed by a pair of goals by Lauren Sheets. Evie Tanella assisted on two of the goals. However, RU only took one more shot over the next 10 minutes of the period as the Mountain Lions battled back for the 5-4 lead.

Aubrey Benton scored early in the second, assisted by Rome Villani, to tie the game, and Sheets' third goal of the game put Regis back up, 6-5. After three straight Brigit Goetsch saves, Springs snuck in a man-up goal. But Tanella's goal at 3:21 gave Regis the lead for good, and Villani added a man-up goal to close out the half, leading 8-6.

The defenses took over in the third quarter, as Kyla Bieker netted the only score of the period. Krista Munsinger, Tanella, and Goetsch all caused turnovers, while Goetsch saved a pair of shots.

Benton scored under a minute into the final quarter, while UCCS scored their first goal of the second half at 10:56. Benton scored twice more in the fourth, and while UCCS scored a final time at 3:30, Goetsch saved five more shots. Munsinger closed out the game by converting a free position shot, securing the 13-8 victory.
