PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Lacrosse team, ranked #18 in the most recent IWLCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, completed a 3-0 week in conference play with a 15-9 win at Colorado State University-Pueblo on Saturday afternoon. The Rangers improve to 10-4 (6-1 RMAC), while the Thunderwolves drop to 4-9 (1-6 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Pueblo scored the first three goals of the game, all in under three minutes, and before Regis attempted a shot. Maggie Schipfer took RU's first shot, and scored on her second attempt at 10:09, assisted by Lauren Sheets. Brigit Goetsch saved the next two Thunderwolf shots, and while Aubrey Benton cut into the lead with an unassisted score, CSUP scored the final goal of the opening period. However, Regis ended the quarter with two forced turnovers by Abby Mays and Krista Munsinger.
Pueblo scored to open the second as well, but Benton quickly responded with a Kyla Bieker-assisted goal. Stella Geffre forced a turnover, and a minute later, Evie Tanella caused another, leading to her converting a free position goal. The teams traded goals over the next seven minutes, with the Rangers getting offensive contributions from Lexie Springman, on a free position shot, and Benton, on a Tanella assist. But CSUP still held a 7-6 advantage going into the break.
Karis Wilson and Tanella gave Regis the lead early in the third with two quick goals, but the Thunderwolves responded with a pair of quick goals of their own. From that moment, the Ranger defense locked in, allowing no more shots in the period. Charlotte Hastings caused a turnover leading to a Tanella goal, and Tanella forced another that led to a Schipfer free position goal. Mays forced two more turnovers to close out the quarter, while Schipfer completed the third-period hat trick.
The dominant defense continued into the fourth, where RU would only allow four shots, Goetsch saved three, and Pueblo was held scoreless. Rome Villani, Bieker, and Springman all landed shots on goal before Eva Searle scored on a Bieker set-up. Mays forced another turnover that led to a Villani goal, assisted by Springman. Regis closed out the 15-9 win with an Ayla Cole caused turnover.
