Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The No. 5 Regis University Rangers men's soccer team (9-1-1, 6-1-1 RMAC) played cross-town rival Metropolitan State University-Denver (7-4-1, 5-2-1 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon and got back on track with a 3-2 win.
MSUD got things started in the 18
th minute as a blocked shot fell to the feet of forward Josh Belfrage who put the Roadrunners ahead 1-0. The teams would spend the next 15 minutes battling hard to score the next goal.
In the 30
th minute, senior
Jake Gilchrist-Dudley subbed in and within three minutes of being on the field he made his impact. The super-sub, Gilchrist-Dudley, took a pass from sophomore
Sindri Kristinsson and netted his first goal of the season to tie the game at one goal apiece. Neither team would score for the remaining 12 minutes of the half.
The second half was all Regis as freshman
Colton Hefty displayed both his skills on both ends of the ball as he stuffed an MSUD player, won the ball, and carried the ball into a one on one situation with the goalie. Hefty remained composed as he slotted the ball into the left side of the net to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead in the 50
th minute.
12 minutes later, Belfrage struck again as he netted the equalizer, as he collected a deflected ball that senior goalkeeper
Ciaran Gibson had saved, and put it into the back of the net.
Hefty was not finished with what he started as he picked up another ball in the offensive end and scored his second goal of the game to give RU a 3-2 lead in the 77
th minute. Regis was able to hold on to secure the win, collecting their ninth win of the season, and sixth in the conference.
Regis was outshot by the visitors 20-13, while also conceding the corner kick battle to the Roadrunners 11-4, but at the end the Rangers came out with the most important factor, the win.
The No. 5 men's soccer team will head out on the road next weekend to face the same opponents they had this weekend, only this time they will be in hostile territory. Fortunately for RU, they are 5-0-0 on the road this season but will look to get two very important conference victories against UC-Colorado Springs on Friday October 14 at 5 p.m., and MSU-Denver on Sunday October 16 at 1 p.m.
