RU Women's Lacrosse dominates in season-opener

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's lacrosse team (1-0) dominated in their season-opener beating the visiting Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves (0-1) 18-8 on Saturday afternoon.

Junior attacker Rachael Walker scored a team-high six goals, while four other players scored for Regis including sophomore attacker Sarah Myres who matched a career-high with three goals and set career-highs with both four assists and seven points.

How It Happened: The Rangers drew first blood almost two minutes into the first half as Myres cruised up the field and slotted her shot past the opposing team's goalkeeper. About two minutes later, CSU-P responded with a goal of their own to knot the game at one goal apiece.

RU went on to score six unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead halfway through the opening half of the game, capped off by Walker's third goal in 16 minutes. The home team got the last word in before the teams headed into halftime scoring a goal with 44 seconds remaining on the clock, taking a 11-3 lead into the break.

The second half saw the Rangers keep their foot on the pedal, taking every opportunity they could to stop the ThunderWolves from reaching their side of the field, while creating their own offensive opportunities. The visitors could not find a way to stop the home squad as RU extended their lead to as many as 10 goals at 16-6, 17-7, and finally 18-8 when the game finally came to a close.

Game Notes: Regis outshot CSU-P 36-20 as they put 29 of their shots on goal, committing three less turnovers (14-17), and scooping up one more ground ball (13-12) than their opponents. The Rangers won 18 draw controls as junior Jada Bonner (2 A, 2 CT) led the way with eight, and Erin Steiner (1 A, 1 CT) and Wendy Donier (2 G, 1 A) added three of their own. Redshirt-senior Erin Todd chipped in with three goals on three shots and two assists. Freshman Ali Vanek added four goals and two assists in her first collegiate game.

Sophomore Hope Correia (W, 1-0) picked up her first win of the season, only giving up four goals, and making six saves in 39 minutes of action between the pipes.

Next Up for the Rangers: The women's lacrosse team will not return home for a month as they take their talent on the road for five-straight games. Four of the five will be played outside of Colorado as the team challenges Colorado Mesa University, No. 5 Lindenwood, McKendree University, Rockhurst University and Oklahoma Baptist University during the stretch.
