COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The first set of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Player of the Week awards have been decided and the Regis University women's lacrosse team swept the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards this week.
Senior
Ali Vanek (Offensive) and junior
Elle Crawford (Defensive) earned the awards after they helped No. 4 ranked Regis to a 15-3 win over Franklin Pierce University in their season-opener on Friday.
Vanek, the leading scorer in the game, scored five goals and handed out one assist for six points in the win. She was nearly unstoppable as she scored on five of her six shot attempts in the game. In fact, Vanek outscored the Ravens offense 5-3 by herself, but it was all made possible by the entire performance of the offense and defense.
On the other end of the field, Crawford was unrelenting in the 15-3 win, stopping 80 percent of the shots that reached her. She made 12 saves, allowing only three goals. Additionally, she was also disruptive in the passing lanes of the FPU attack as she made a variety of interceptions and came away with a career-high 11 ground balls as well.
The team got a big win in the season opener, but now they will travel to Florida for their spring break trip where they will matchup with some stiff competition for three games.
