No. 8 Rangers open 2024 season with 19-13 road win over Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla. — The No. 8 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team opened its highly anticipated 2024 season on Friday, overcoming an early first-quarter deficit to knock off (RV) Florida Tech University by a 19-13 final.

Regis (1-0) had eight different players score on the evening, led by a game-high five goals from sophomore midfielder Shea Murphy and dominated the draw control category, 26-10, over the Panthers (2-3 overall).

HOW IT HAPPENED
After trailing 4-2 at the end of the first quarter, and 5-3 early in the second, the Rangers' offense went on a 5-0 goal scoring blitz over just 2:50 of game time to take an 8-5 advantage.

Senior midfielder Lily Ferguson, the reigning RMAC Midfielder of the Year, tallied the first two goals of the scoring run at 12:39 and 12:08, respectively.

Graduate student midfielder Bailey Truex followed with a man-up goal before Murphy and fellow sophomore Maggie Schipfer concluded the run with scores at 11:16 and 9:49 remaining in the half.

Florida Tech battled back in what would be a high-scoring second quarter (15 total goals) as the Panthers rattled off three straight goals to briefly tie the game again at 8-8 with 5:42 remaining in the first half.

Regis closed the half strong, scoring four of the last five goals of the second quarter — including the first two scores in a Rangers uniform for sophomore Lauren Sheets — to take a 12-9 lead into the break.

The Rangers continued that momentum into the third quarter as they scored the first three goals of the second half, producing their largest lead of the game at 15-9 following another goal by Sheets with 3:38 remaining.

Limiting the Panthers to just four goals in the second half, two in each quarter, the Rangers were able to lean on Florida Tech in the fourth quarter to methodically wrap up the 19-13 victory.

The trio of Sheets, Ferguson and Truex all produced hat tricks, while Schipfer netted two goals and joined Murphy as one of five different Rangers to produce multi-goal games.

Rounding out the Rangers scoring on Friday were redshirt senior Gabby Rothermund (1 goal, 4 assists), junior Madeline Schallmoser (1 goal, 1 assist) and junior transfer Megan Bunker, who scored and scooped high a game-high 10 draw controls in her Regis debut.

Defensively, the Rangers as a team caused 14 turnovers — led by Schallmoser and defenseman Terah Skillings with three apiece — and junior goalkeeper Brigit Goetsch made eight saves en route to picking up her first win of 2024.

The Rangers will have a few days to relax and enjoy the Florida sunshine before they square off against No. 5 ranked Florida Southern College at 9 a.m. (Mountain Time) on Monday out in Lakeland.
